Chesney Lee Hawkes (born September 22, 1971 in Windsor , Berkshire , England ) is a British pop singer and film actor .

Hawkes was best known for his single The One and Only and the accompanying film Buddy's Song . Released in early 1991, the single was written and produced by Nik Kershaw , a longtime friend of the Hawkes family.

Life

Chesney's parents are the former singer of the Tremeloes , Leonard "Chip" Hawkes and the actress Carol Dilworth, known from the movie Goosebumps . Chesney has a sister, Keely, who released an album herself as a pop singer in 1993 with moderate success, and a brother named Jodie, who is on drums in Chesney's band . Chesney was named after the comedian Chesney Allen .

Hawkes has been married since July 4, 1997 and has three children.

Career

1991–1992: Success through music and film

Chesney Hawkes (2004)

Hawkes' career began in early 1991 alongside The Who frontman Roger Daltrey in the movie Buddy's Song , in which he played the title role. Shortly after the film was released, he released his best-known single, The One and Only , which topped the UK charts for five weeks. The song was written by Nik Kershaw . With other singles like I'm a Man Not a Boy or Secrets of the Heart , he was able to stay in the charts, but no longer achieve the success of The One and Only . During those two years, Hawkes toured the world with his band.

1993–2001: Second album and creative break

In mid-1993, Chesney Hawkes released his second album Get the Picture . It was then almost nine years before the music of Hawkes was heard again, if only in parts of England. In late 2001, the single Stay Away Baby Jane was released , which was not very successful.

2005–2008: return through TV formats

In March 2005, the British broadcaster Channel 4 Hawkes made the offer to play in the third season of the program The Games , in which ten celebrities like Mel C ( Sporty Spice ) have to compete in Olympic disciplines . The offer from Channel 4 was followed by another TV offer from the British broadcaster ITV in April of the same year , which gave Hawkes the chance of a record deal . In Hit Me Baby One More Time , a kind of comeback show, he made it to the finals, but he lost to Shakin 'Stevens . Nevertheless, Hawkes released the single Another Fine Mess that same year , which rose to number 48 in the UK charts. In early 2008, Hawkes released Another Fine Mess album with Sargent Poppy Records (his own record company ) .

On April 26, 2020, Hawkes took part as a robot in a special edition of The Masked Singer . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , jury members Jonathan Ross and Davina McCall assessed the recorded performances of the three candidates at home via video switch . They eventually named Hawkes and his cover of ... Baby One More Time the winner.

Projects

Hawks / Alexander / Hawkes

The idea for Hawks / Alexander / Hawkes was brought to life together with the English comedian Tony Hawks and Ash Alexander. Together they usually write less serious texts. On the official Hawks / Alexander / Hawkes MySpace page you can listen to some songs and watch a short film.

Songwriting

Hawkes made his mark as a songwriter for A1 , Caprice , Triple Eight , Jamie Benson , Bare Jr. and Tricky a name. He wrote the single Wasted for Jennifer Paige , who tried her comeback with it (after her hit Crush ). For the album To Be Frank by Nik Kershaw he wrote the song Jane Doe .
