Tricky
Tricky (born January 27, 1968 in Bristol , England , actually Adrian Nicholas Matthews Thaws ) is a British musician and film artist. Tricky is considered one of the most important protagonists of the trip-hop movement, although he himself rejects this genre designation .
biography
Thaw's childhood and adolescence were marked by the absence of his father, whom he never met, and his mother's suicide when he was four years old. Tricky later named his first solo album after his mother Maxine Quaye .
Tricky was initially a guest musician friend on the first two albums of the Bristol music group Massive Attack , but was never officially part of the band. In 1994 he separated from the group and began a solo career. In 1995 he released his first solo album Maxinquaye together with Martina Topley-Bird , which became a best seller and is still considered a milestone and pioneer album in trip-hop. With his sudden international fame and subsequent media interest, Tricky found it difficult to make friends. He expresses himself critical of journalism and the music industry in interviews and also in his songs Tricky Kid or For Real .
His musical oeuvre cannot be clearly assigned to a musical genre. After Maxinquaye, he experimented on later albums with music styles such as reggae , rock and hip-hop . However, he was never able to build on the success of his debut - neither in terms of sales nor in terms of feedback from the critics. His eleventh album Vulnerable tends towards rock, although it still has the typical features of the tricky sound. In July 2008, a studio album entitled Knowle West Boy was released on the Domino record label . Knowle West is the name of the neighborhood in Bristol where he grew up. In December 2009 Tricky released the album Tricky Meets South Rakkas Crew with Domino together with the dub collective South Rakkas Crew . In May 2013 his album False Idols was released , on which Tricky collaborated with artists such as Peter Silberman ( The Antlers ) and Nneka . The 2014 album, released under his real name Adrian Thaws , received some very bad reviews.
As an actor you can do it in the Luc Besson -Spielfilm The Fifth Element alongside villain Gary Oldman see. In other films ( Go Now , Clean ) he always embodied himself. In 2005 he was seen on American television in the series Girlfriends in several episodes as the leader of a band. In 2008 he published his directorial debut Brown Punk , in which he also plays and whose soundtrack includes bands from Tricky's record label Brown Punk .
Tricky has lived and worked in Berlin since 2015. In 2016 he released the collaboration album Skilled Mechanics with DJ Milo & Luke Harris. Ununiform followed in 2017 , which Tricky conceived during a stay in Moscow. It includes features from Martina Topley-Bird, film director Asia Argento and Russian rapper Smoky Mo, among others.
Tricky's EP 20.20 was released in May 2020 ; in June of the same year, the single Fall Please announced the 14th tricky album Fall To Pieces . The online radio station ByteFM described the single with the singer Marta Złakowska as "very catchy by tricky standards".
