In many countries, 1968 is the climax of the left-wing student and civil rights movements of the 1960s, which are therefore also known as the 68 movement . In the USA these are the protests against the Vietnam War and the black civil rights movement, whose leader Martin Luther King was assassinated in April of that year , in France the May riots , in the Federal Republic the student movement , the protests against the emergency constitution , and the extra-parliamentary opposition , the Prague Spring in the Czechoslovakia , the March riots in Poland , the student protests in Mexico and the Zengakuren protests in Japan .

Politics and world events

Middle East conflict

On December 28, an Israeli commando destroyed 13 aircraft in retaliation at Beirut Airport .

Vietnam War

On January 30, the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam (FNL) from communist North Vietnam started the Tet offensive with around 84,000 fighters and attacked the provincial capitals of Saigon and Huế . The strategy and strength of the attacks surprised the American and South Vietnamese troops, which until then had seen themselves rather in the upper hand in the conflict. The offensive ends in a severe military defeat for the FNL, which loses half of its troops. Saigon and Huế are badly destroyed. The FNL is severely weakened and hardly appears in the further course of the war. However, it can boast an important psychological success: for the first time it is becoming clear to the US public that the Vietnam War could end in defeat. President Lyndon B. Johnson is losing popularity and political credibility, and anti-war protests are mounting.

The massacre of My Lai committed by US troops on March 16, which was not made known until the following year through an article in Life magazine , finally turned the public mood.

Prague spring

In Czechoslovakia , under the motto “socialism with a human face”, conditions are gradually being liberalized under Alexander Dubček , who in January becomes the first secretary of the KSČ . Among other things, the press censorship is lifted. However, this development ended suddenly on the night of August 21, when around half a million soldiers from the Soviet Union , Poland , Hungary and Bulgaria marched into Czechoslovakia and occupied all strategically important positions in the country within a few hours. Dubček and other high-ranking members of the government were arrested, brought to Moscow and ousted in favor of Gustáv Husák, who was loyal to the line .

Nigeria / Biafra

In the Biafra War , which has been going on since the previous year, two thirds of the breakaway province of Biafra is occupied by the significantly better equipped troops of the Nigerian government. There is a famine in the region, the images of which go around the world.
