Jon Yasuhiro Nakamatsu (* 1968 in San José / California ) is an American pianist.

Nakamatsu studied German at Stanford University . He took private piano lessons with Marina Derryberry and Karl Ulrich Schnabel , the son of Artur Schnabel , and lessons in music theory and composition with Leonard Stein . He received international attention when he became the first American since 1981 to win the gold medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition .

This was followed by concert tours through America, Europe and Asia with orchestras under the direction of James Conlon , Marek Janowski , Raymond Leppard , Stanislaw Skrowaczewski , Osmo Vänskä and Hans Vonk and recitals in Carnegie Hall , Lincoln Center and Kennedy Center , in Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Paris, London and Milan. At the White House he appeared before President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton .

As a chamber musician, he has performed with the Brentano String Quartet , the Tokyo String Quartet , the Miami, Prazak, St. Lawrence and Ying String Quartet , among others . He forms the Nakamatsu / Manasse Duo with clarinetist Jon Manasse , and both are artistic directors of the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival in Massachusetts. His discography includes more than a dozen albums.
