Osmo Antero Vänskä (born February 28, 1953 in Sääminki , Finland) is a Finnish conductor .

Career

Vänskä began his musical career as a clarinetist. After studying at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and in Berlin with Karl Leister , he was first clarinetist in the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra (1971–1977) and deputy clarinetist of the Helsinki Philharmonic from 1977–1982 . He passed his conducting examination at the Sibelius Academy in 1979 with Jorma Panula . In 1982 Vänskä won the conducting competition in Besançon .

From 1988 to 2008 Vänskä was chief conductor of the Sinfonia Lahti , from 1993 to 1996 also of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and from 1996 chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra . Since 2003 Vänskä has been chief conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra , with which he has been since 2004 a. a. has recorded the Beethoven symphonies and the Sibelius symphonies in full. The CD recording of the ninth symphony received a Grammy nomination in 2007 . Vänskä lives in Minneapolis .

The conductor first achieved international recognition and recognition with a CD recording that presented Jean Sibelius's Violin Concerto for the first time in the original version - also together with the revised version. Leonidas Kavakos is the soloist in both versions . This recording was followed by the complete recording of the 7 symphonies and all orchestral works by Jean Sibelius. Also on the Swedish label BIS are recordings with works a. a. by Kalevi Aho , Einojuhani Rautavaara , Bernhard Crusell , Uuno Klami , Sofia Gubaidulina and Joonas Kokkonen .
