history

Former seat of the municipality of Sääminki in Savonlinna

Sääminki was dissolved after 1477 as an independent parish from the parish of Juva . The medieval Sääminki encompassed a large area, which gradually shrank through the establishment of new parishes. In 1578 Rantasalmi broke away as a separate parish from Sääminki, followed in 1617 by Puumala , around 1630 Sulkava and 1640 Kerimäki . In addition, Sääminki gave areas to the Joroinen parish founded in 1631 and Heinävesi founded in 1856 . Olavinlinna Castle and the town of Savonlinna , which was founded in 1639 under the protection of the castle, were also located within the Sääminki parish .

With the Peace of Åbo , Sääminki moved from Sweden to Russia in 1743 . When all of Finland came under Russian rule in 1809, Sääminki was annexed to the newly founded Grand Duchy of Finland together with the rest of the Old Finland . In 1917 it became part of the independent Republic of Finland.

The political municipality of Sääminki was created in 1867 when the municipal administration was separated from the parishes. In 1968 the area around the villages of Ahvensalmi and Oravi changed from the municipality of Rantasalmi to Sääminki. In 1973 the municipality of Sääminki was dissolved and most of it was added to the city of Savonlinna. A smaller part went to the Punkaharju community .
