Savonlinna Cathedral
The Savonlinna Cathedral is a church building in the Finnish city of Savonlinna . Built between 1874 and 1878, it served from 1896 to 1925 as the episcopal church of the Evangelical Lutheran diocese of Savonlinna. Today it is the parish church of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Savonlinna.
The cathedral of Savonlinna was built under Axel Hampus Dahlström in the neo-Gothic style and offers space for 1000 worshipers. Although the bishopric was moved to Viipuri (Vyborg) in Russia today in 1925 , the title “Cathedral” was retained. Today the bishopric is back in Finland, but has been moved to Mikkeli .
During the winter war of 1940, Savonlinna was bombed, which also damaged the 51 meter high cathedral. Under Bertel Liljeqvist, it was rebuilt in 1947–1948 a little easier than originally. During the most recent restoration between 1990 and 1991 under Ansu Ånström, the organ and the altar window were also replaced.
The organ
In connection with the complete renovation of the cathedral, a new organ was built. It was built by the Finnish organ builder Martti Porthan. The organ has 45 registers . The German baroque organ made by the famous organ builder Gottfried Silbermann served as a model . The organ has 3 manuals and pedal and a mechanical organ.
