Punkaharju [ ˈpuŋkɑˌhɑrju ] is a former municipality in the Finnish countryside of South Savo . Since 2013 it has been part of the city of Savonlinna .

Punkaharju is located 35 kilometers east of downtown Savonlinna in the Finnish Lake District . The former municipality of Punkaharju is rural and has an area of ​​748.1 square kilometers. Almost 40 percent of it (286.9 square kilometers) consists of inland waters. The last population of the municipality was 3,645 (as of December 31, 2012). The main town is called Punkasalmi and has 1,495 inhabitants. In addition to Punkasalmi, there is a second settlement center ( taajama ) in Punkaharju with the town of Tuunaansalmi (207 inhabitants; as of December 31, 2011 ).

Punkaharju is famous for the natural monument of the same name, Punkaharju (Os) : a 7 kilometer long and 25 meter high Os ( harju, hill ridge) between the lakes Puruvesi and Pihlajavesi . It was formed 10,000 years ago during the last ice age by meltwater flows. The naturally beautiful ridge is considered the Finnish " national landscape ". Today the area is under nature protection and is a popular tourist destination. The Punkaharju Arboretum and the Lusto Forest Museum are also located here . This modern museum (opened in 1994) deals with the themes of wood and forest.

Punkaharju was dissolved from Kerimäki as an independent community in 1922 . In 1973 Punkaharju was added to a smaller part of the dissolved municipality of Sääminki . At the beginning of 2013, Punkaharju was incorporated into the neighboring town of Savonlinna together with Kerimäki .
