Career
Beginnings in the Finnish championship
Juho Hänninen began his career as a rally driver in 1999 at the age of 18 with a VW Golf . He initially drove in the Finnish Junior Rally Championship and in 2002 achieved fifth place in the championship in the Seat Ibiza GTi 16V . End of the year he went up the Honda Civic Type R to. With this car he finished eighth in the Finnish rally championship of Group N under 2 liters in 2003 . In 2004 he won the championship in this class. From 2005 he competed in the Finnish championship with a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI from Rally Rent Europe . With the more powerful vehicle, it increasingly achieved a top ranking. He was runner-up in Group N over 2 liters and won a rally of the Estonian championship.
Entry into the World Rally Championship
In 2006, Hänninen continued for Rally Rent Europe , but now in a newer Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, in the Finnish rally championship. He finished on the podium in two championship races and at the end of the season he finished second in the Group N standings. In addition, he completed his first appearances in the World Rally Championship . On his debut, the Rally Sweden at the start of the season, he was the best-placed driver with a Group N car. He also finished the Rally Sardinia , his second WRC rally, as the fastest Group N driver. Afterwards, he took part in the WRC for the first time in a World Rally Car , the Mitsubishi Lancer WRC 05, at Rally Finland . He returned to the New Zealand Rally with the Group-N-Lancer and achieved his best result in the WRC with ninth place overall. He drove the Rally Wales at the end of the season with a Citroën C2 S1600 and prevailed against all other drivers with Super 1600 cars.
PWRC in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX
In the 2007 season, Hänninen took part in the Production World Rally Championship as part of the WRC for the first time with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX from Rally Rent Europe . There he started six out of eight races. At the Rally Sweden he was the fastest PWRC driver, but he was subsequently disqualified because of an irregular fuel pump. His best results in the PWRC were third in the Argentina Rally and second in the Wales Rally. At the end of the season, he finished fifth in the PWRC championship. In between, he also completed three rallies in the WRC with the Mitsubishi Lancer WRC 05. With this vehicle he achieved eighth overall place in the Sardinia Rally, with which he scored his first WRC point.
In 2008, Hänninen continued to regularly take part in the PWRC with the Gruppe-N-Lancer. He celebrated his first PWRC victory at the Rally Sweden. With eighth place overall, he also got his second WRC point. Later he achieved two more PWRC victories at the Rally Finland and the Rally Japan, which he took the lead in the championship. However, since he had to post a retirement at the final Rally Wales, he finished the PWRC just two points behind in second place in the overall standings. In addition, Hänninen also had his first two appearances in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge in the 2008 season . After being in a Lancer Evo IX fifth in the Rally of Portugal had become, he won in a Peugeot 207 S2000 of Kronos Racing the Rally Russia . The points from both rallies were enough for eighth place in the final score of the IRC.
IRC and SWRC in the Škoda Fabia S2000
In 2009, Hänninen was hired by the Škoda Motorsport works team for the IRC and he received a Škoda Fabia S2000 as a new tool . With accidents during the first two IRC missions, the start of the season was unsuccessful for him. Halfway through the season, he won the Rally Russia for the second time in a row. This was followed by third place in the Barum Czech Rally Zlín . At the end of the season, after a total of six rallies, he finished sixth in the overall ranking of the IRC. In the WRC, he only started in Rally Finland, where he drove a Škoda Fabia S2000, which was used by Raimund Baumschlager's Team Red Bull Škoda . He finished the Rally Finland in tenth place and as the best-placed driver with a Super 2000 car.
In the 2010 season, Hänninen continued his collaboration with the Škoda works team. For the first time he played a full season in the IRC. There he showed a strong form from the beginning and was regularly placed in the front ranks. He won the Argentina Rally, the Sardinia Rally and the Scotland Rally . He also finished on the podium in seven other rallies. Thus he won the championship prematurely and achieved the greatest success of his career so far. He was also back in the Red Bull Škoda at the Rally Finland, where he took class victory in the SWRC and took two WRC points with ninth place overall.
In 2011, Hänninen only competed in selected IRC races for the Škoda works team and did not originally plan to defend the title. Mainly he started for the Red Bull Škoda team in the SWRC class of the World Rally Championship. After finishing second class in the rallies in Mexico and Sardinia , he won the SWRC three times: in the Rally Greece , the Rally Finland and the Rally Catalonia . With that he secured the SWRC title. With seven starts in the WRC, he also managed five times to place in the WRC points with the inferior Super 2000 car. In the IRC, he first won the Islas Canarias rally and won an asphalt rally for the first time. This was followed by victories at the Prime Yalta Rally and the Sata Rallye Açores . During the season, Hänninen repeatedly took the lead in the championship, but just as often had to give it up again without a fight, as Škoda did not use him in all rallies, as planned. Before the penultimate run of the season, he had slipped to fourth place in the drivers' standings despite three victories. With second place at the Rally of Scotland he got back into the game for the IRC title.
Promotion to the WRC
In 2013 Juho Hänninen drove three races for the M-Sport team under Malcolm Wilson, but was able to prevail against the strong competition in his own team, including Thierry Neuville . His best place in the 2013 season was a 6th place at the Rally Sweden .
Hänninen then switched to the newly founded Hyundai team and, as one of three test drivers, was significantly involved in the development of the Hyundai i20 WRC . During the 2014 season he also contested a few selected races in the Hyundai i20 WRC. The best placings here were also two sixth places in Poland and Finland . At the end of the season, Hänninen was in 13th place in the drivers' standings with a total of 20 points. At the end of the 2014 season, the collaboration with Hyundai Motorsport ended.
In 2015, Juho Hänninen only contested the Finland Rally in a rented Ford Fiesta RS WRC and also came in sixth here.
In 2016, Juho Hänninen was hired by Tommi Mäkinen as test driver for Toyota's new WRC project and was the main test driver for the new Yaris WRC. In addition to him, Jari-Matti Latvala and Esapekki Lappi were signed as further drivers for the 2017 season at the end of 2016 .
