Sébastien Loeb / Daniel Elena driver world champion 2009

The Rally Great Britain (Wales) was the twelfth and final FIA World Championship round in 2009 . The rally consisted of 16 special stages and was driven between October 23rd and 25th.

Race report

Sébastien Loeb (Citroën) had secured his sixth world title with a win at the season finale in Wales . His rival for the world title, Mikko Hirvonen (Ford), had to be content with second place, thereby burying his dream of his first world title. Loeb came to Wales one point behind World Cup leader Hirvonen. The starting position was therefore clear. The one who finishes ahead of the other in the points is world champion. Loeb and Hirvonen fought a second duel at the top on the first day. Loeb took the lead in the first test. Hirvonen kept coming close, but couldn't push him from the top. The preliminary decision was made on Saturday morning. In special stages eight and nine, Hirvonen had problems getting up to speed and lost time. The gap grew to 25 seconds. Loeb started the final Sunday with a lead of 30.2 seconds. Hirvonen was not yet defeated and shortened the gap to Loeb in the first two special stages to 18.2 seconds. In the penultimate special stage, the hood of Hirvonen's Ford Focus came off. On a full throttle it folded up and blocked the Finn's view. Hirvonen had to stop and remove the hood. That took him about a minute. Although Loeb had turbo problems in the last special stage, Hirvonen was unable to catch up with the French. Hirvonen was able to maintain second place in the overall standings against Daniel Sordo (Citroën), who was third just behind him.

At the award ceremony Eyvind Brynildsen celebrated victory in the PWRC classification of the Rally Wales . It would have been his first victory in a World Championship. But a short time later the unpleasant surprise came for him. The Norwegian, who had dominated the rally in his class, was removed from the ranking due to non-compliant brakes. So the winner was Martin Prokop . Armindo Araújo won the PWRC title three points ahead of Martin Prokop.
