The 2014 World Rally Championship is the 42nd FIA World Rally Championship. It started on January 16 in Monte Carlo and will last until November 16 in the UK. The traditional world championship run in Greece was replaced by the Rally Poland . In total, the World Rally Championship takes place in 13 countries on four continents . After Citroën and Volkswagen , Hyundai is a third works team to take part in the World Rally Championship. Volkswagen secured the manufacturers 'world championship title in the Rally Australia and the drivers' world championship title went to the duo Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia in the Catalonia Rally for the second time in a row after 2013 .

Regulations

Points and Penalties

The scoring system for the first ten drivers is 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1. The same system also applies to the manufacturers' classification whose teams have been registered for it. For the power stage , the three fastest drivers each receive 3-2-1 bonus points for the drivers' world championship. If a participant appears too late to a checkpoint or to the start of a special stage, he will be given a time penalty. The stay in the Service Park is precisely defined. If this period is exceeded, there is also a time penalty.

vehicles

The vehicles are divided into three classes and these in turn into further categories . The WRC is the premier class in the World Rally Championship , followed by WRC2 and WRC3 . The junior class Junior World Rally Championship ( JWRC ) is integrated in the WRC3 .

Rally 2 regulations

Vehicles that retire on one day of the rally due to a technical defect or accident, but can be repaired, may start again the next day with a time penalty of five minutes for each missed special stage. You are still entitled to score world championship points.

Rules changes from the Rally Portugal

  • Drivers who start under the rally 2 regulations are now entitled to collect World Championship points in the power stage.
  • The drivers starting under the Rally 2 regulations no longer have to be the last in the upcoming special stages, but as the first vehicles.

Course of the season

82nd Monte Carlo Rally

The 2014 Monte Carlo Rally was again shaped by the weather. Already on the first day, most of the drivers made the wrong choice of tires and were driving the wrong tires in slush. Bryan Bouffier , in a private Ford Fiesta RS WRC, was the leader after the first day after an impeccable performance and the right tires. World champion Sébastien Ogier coped better with the changing road conditions on the second and third days and overtook Bouffier, who was second on the podium at the end of the rally.

Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila (Volkswagen Polo R WRC)

62nd Rally Sweden

After Sébastien Ogier drove off the track and lost more than four minutes, the Rally Sweden turned into a duel between Andreas Mikkelsen and Jari-Matti Latvala . On the last day of the competition, Latvala made everything clear for Volkswagen and won ahead of his team-mate Mikkelsen. Mads Østberg ( Citroën DS3 WRC ) drove a good rally, he finished third and won the three additional world championship points in the Power Stage. The Hyundai team struggled with technical problems, but Thierry Neuville set the second-best time in two special stages.

28th Rally Mexico

Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) won the Rally Mexico like last year. Jari-Matti Latvala , Ogier's team-mate, finished second and for the first time on the podium of the top three, Hyundai with Thierry Neuville . The Ford and Citroën drivers, especially Mikko Hirvonen and Mads Østberg , performed well but were not rewarded. In the world championship, VW drivers Ogier (63 points) and Latvala (60) set themselves apart from the competition with around 30 points.

48th Rally Portugal

Sébastien Ogier and co-driver Julien Ingrassia won the Rally Portugal for the fourth time . At the beginning of the week it rained heavily in southern Portugal, which made the special stages more difficult. The gravel roads were partly dry and in other places the drivers drove in deep mud. As a result, after the first day of the rally, as a result of accidents, some drivers were later only allowed to start under the rally 2 regulations and were given time penalties. Ogier followed the strategy of «attacking wherever you can and otherwise exercising the necessary security». This was the strategy it took to win.

34th Rally Argentina

Jari-Matti Latvala did not strike in Argentina, nor did Volkswagen team-mate and reigning world champion Sébastien Ogier . In the World Cup, Latvala narrowed his gap to Ogier to 24 points. Kris Meeke finished third, the second podium for the Citroën works driver this year. Most of the rally took place in wet, cool and partly foggy weather.

11th Rally Sardinia

The last ten rallies have all been won with the Volkswagen Polo R WRC , a new record in the World Rally Championship. Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala dominated the sixth world championship run, they fought a close duel until Latvala lost a few minutes due to a puncture.

2nd Rally Poland

Sébastien Ogier celebrated the 17th overall victory of the Polo R WRC in 20 rallies at the Poland Rally . Andreas Mikkelsen completed the strong Volkswagen team result with a great performance and Jari-Matti Latvala with a race to catch up with the ranks two and five. Thierry Neuville finished third with the Hyundai i20 WRC .

64th Rally Finland

Jari-Matti Latvala ( VW Polo R WRC ) won his home rally with a narrow lead of 3.6 seconds ahead of team-mate Sébastien Ogier . Although Latvala struggled with braking problems on the third day, it was still enough for victory. Kris Meeke ( Citroën DS3 WRC ) finished third with an almost flawless performance .

Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul (Hyundai i20 WRC)

32nd Rally Germany

After an eventful and exciting rally, Thierry Neuville and Hyundai won the World Rally Championship for the first time. Team-mate Dani Sordo finished second.

23rd Rally Australia

With the triple victory in the Rally Australia , Volkswagen secured the manufacturers' title three world championship races before the end of the 2014 season. Sébastien Ogier won ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen .

5th Rally France (Alsace)

Jari-Matti Latvala showed a convincing and confident performance on the three days of the Rally France . He made no mistakes and took his first victory in an asphalt rally. With the win, Latvala postponed the title decision. He is 27 points behind Sébastien Ogier .

50th Rally Catalonia (Spain)

With a solid and controlled performance, Sébastien Ogier drove out the victory. He relegated his team-mate and only competitor for the world title, Jari-Matti Latvala, to second place. Thus Ogier was able to celebrate his second world title in a row.

70th Rally Great Britain (Wales)

World champion Sébastien Ogier ended the 2014 World Rally Championship with a win. The French won and thus celebrated his eighth win of the season at the 13th and final run of the year.

Competitions

The New Zealand Rally does not appear on the rally calendar in 2014 and 2015. The agreement with the organizers of the Rally Australia to change the host countries annually is expiring. A similar agreement is to be negotiated again in 2015. After 2009, the Poland Rally is back on the calendar. On one day, special stages were driven in neighboring Lithuania . The traditional Rally Greece did not win a world championship run for 2014.
