Salou [ səˈlɔʊ̯ ] is a coastal city in the province of Tarragona ( Catalonia / Spain ), about 15 km from the provincial capital of Tarragona . It has 27,476 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019).

The city's economy is mainly based on tourism . Nearby is the PortAventura World leisure resort .

The city has four major beaches. The Platja de Llevant (east beach) is the largest with a length of 1.2 km. There are also some smaller bays for swimming.

On the beach promenade Passeig de Jaume I is a villa known as Casa Bonet , which was designed by the architect Domènech Sugranyes i Gras , a student of Antoni Gaudí .

history

Used as a port by the Greeks and Romans, it appears in the historical record during an important event: The flight of James I from Aragon in 1229. He conquered the Balearic Islands from Salou and finally founded the Kingdom of Mallorca . In 1286 Alfons III is also. from Aragon started from Salou to conquer Menorca. Later Salou became a base for pirates. In 1530 the Archbishop of Tarragona had a defensive structure called Torre Vella built in Salou. In 1865 the station was put into operation, which heralded a new phase of development that 100 years later led to a tourist boom and thus to wealth for the community. Salou was split off from the neighboring community of Vila-seca in 1989.

PortAventura Resort

The PortAventura is a constantly growing amusement park on the Costa Daurada. The resort has luxurious 4-star rooms, a theme park (Costa Caribe Aquatic Park) and a conference center. The main attractions of the theme park are the Dragon Khan, a large B&M mega-looper, Furius Baco, one of the fastest roller coasters in Europe, and the Hurricane Condor, a large tower that simulates free fall from a height of 100 m. In 2012 a new roller coaster, the Shambhala: Expedición al Himalaya, opened right next to the Dragon Kahn. The park also has a large multi-media show called FiestaAventura. Fireworks, fountains and parades are shown every night between late June and late August. Ferrari Land with the highest and fastest accelerator and a Ferrari Hotel will open in 2017.

Lumine Mediterranea Beach & Golf Club

Salou is also home to the Lumine Golf Club (formerly known as PortAventura golf). There are three places: North, South and Central. The northern and central ones were designed by Greg Norman and the southern one by the "Green Project". [1] The facilities consist of two club houses, a beach club, a Lumine restaurant, a Hoyo 19 restaurant, shops, rental services and a golf school. In the future, six housing developments will be built in the vicinity of the golf course, as well as two 5-star hotels, a sports facility and an international school.

Teatre Auditori de Salou

The Auditorium Theater of Salou (Teatre Auditori de Salou) is an important part of local cultural and recreational activities. The theater hosts political, educational and cultural events and has also drawn famous musicians such as Sergio Dalma to the region.

Llevant beach

Salou's main promenade is Jaume I, which runs along the coast to Llevant Beach, the longest beach in town. Other beaches are the beach de Ponent, Platja dels Capellans, Platja Llarga and the bay of Crancs. Salou has 34 blue flag beaches.
