Creixell is a Catalan municipality in the province of Tarragona in northeastern Spain . It is in the comarca of Tarragonès .

Geographical location

The municipality is located between Tarragona (18 kilometers) and Barcelona (70 kilometers) on the Costa Daurada and is accessed by the N-340 national road. Although the district is also crossed by the Barcelona-Tarragona, Barcelona- Valls , the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed line and the A-7 motorway , Creixell has neither a train stop nor a motorway junction.

The elongated demarcation extends from the two kilometer long beach north to the mountainous hinterland.

history

The place was first mentioned in the 12th century as a property of the Episcopal Curia of Barcelona. Towards the end of the same century, the place first came into the possession of the Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres in the Comarca Osona and then - with the secularization of the monastery in 1572 - into the possession of the Jesuits from Barcelona. This remained until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767.

Worth seeing

The most prominent building is the 11th century castle, although most of the remaining parts did not emerge until the 16th century. The parish church of Sant Jaume was built from 1559 on over a smaller Romanesque church from the 11th century. The helmet of the tower, which was only completed in 1771, was renewed in 1917 and comes from the modernist architect Josep Maria Jujol .

economy

The main source of income for Creixell is tourism. In addition to eleven holiday home areas, there are five campsites for over 5000 guests.

Culture and tradition

The Festa Major in honor of the patron saint Sant Jaume takes place in the week of July 25th.
