Sant Pere de Casserres is a former 11th century Benedictine monastery near the town of Vic . It belongs to the municipality of Les Masies de Roda in the Comarca Osona of the autonomous region of Catalonia and lies on a narrow rock spur above the Pantà de Sau reservoir , which is formed by the Ter river .

history

In 898 a castle is mentioned for the first time on the site of the later monastery. In 972 there was already a church dedicated to the Apostle Peter . In 1006 the Countess Ermetruit of Osona- Cardona acquired the Casserres estate from Count Raimund Borrell of Barcelona and founded a monastery with her daughter-in-law Enúnica, which was also consecrated to Peter. An abbot by the name of Acfred has come down to us as early as 1012 ; the abbey church was consecrated in 1053 . The monastery became the burial place of the founders and other noble families in the area who made donations to it. It also served as the retirement home of single women who bequeathed their fortune to the monastery in order to be accompanied when they died. Since there were soon less than 12 monks living in the monastery, it was downgraded to a priory in 1060 . In 1079 the monastery was subordinated to the Benedictine Abbey of Cluny and became the administrative center of the Cluny possessions in Catalonia.

From the 14th century it was coming and the prior was installed by the kings of Aragón . The first of these appointed priors was Pedro de Luna, who later became Pope Benedict XIII. who resided as an antipope in Avignon and Peñíscola . Conflicts with the Bishop of Vic , earthquakes and population decline led to the decline of the monastery. At no time did more than 12 or 13 people live in the monastery and by the end of the 15th century there were only two monks left.

In 1572 the priory was subordinated to the Jesuit College of Bethlehem in Barcelona , to which it was until the abolition of the Jesuit order by Charles III. belonged to in 1767. Thereafter, the facility was privately owned until it was bought by Osona County Council in 1991. The restoration took place from 1994 to 1998.

church

The church of Sant Pere has a square floor plan and three ships by two cruciform pillars are separated. All three naves have barrel vaults and end in semicircular apses that are vaulted by quarter tons. Remnants of the painting can still be seen in places. On the outer walls, the absides have Lombard decorative elements such as pilaster strips and blind arcades .

Bell tower

The square bell tower has a pyramid roof and only two floors. The upper floor has two arched windows on each side .

Cloister

The cloister was built at the end of the 11th century and is similar to the cloister of the Santa Maria de l'Estany monastery . It was rebuilt with original columns and capitals after an earthquake in the 15th century . The capitals have vegetable and geometric motifs.

Legend

After a legend the monastery over the grave of a child out of the house of the counts of Cardona was built, could speak the three days after his birth, and predicted that it would die after thirty days. It commanded that his body should be tied on a mule and that where the mule would settle a monastery should be built and consecrated to the Apostle Peter. The remains of a mummified child have been preserved in the monastery, venerated as relics by the inhabitants of the region and attributed supernatural powers. In times of great drought, the urn with the child's remains was carried in procession to the Ter.
