Raimund Borrell , or Borrell III. (Catalan: Ramon Borrell ; Spanish: Ramón Borrell , * 972 ; † 1017 ) was Count of Barcelona , of Girona and from 992 of Ausona .

He was the son of Borrell II of Barcelona and Letgarda de Rouergue. From 988 he was assigned to his father.

In 993 he married Ermesinde von Carcassonne , with whom he had a son: Berengar Raimund I (* 1005; † 1035).

Between 1000 and 1002 he was attacked many times by Almansor . In 1003 he led a military expedition against Lleida , which, however, prompted a new attack by Almansur's son Abd al-Malik .

In 1010 he took the opportunity to expand his power at the expense of the crumbling Caliphate of Cordoba . He organized a campaign against Cordoba together with Armengol I of Urgell , Bernard of Besalú and Wahid, a Muslim general of Muhammad Al-Mahdi. The army destroyed the Caliphate Sulaiman al-Mustain and liberated Catalonia from any Moorish rule. Ermengol I of Urgell died in the battle of Córdoba on September 1st.

In 1015 and 1016 he led a new campaign against the Ebro and Segre . Through the booty he retained the loyalty of his barons.

He repopulated Segarra , Conca de Barberà and the Camp de Tarragona and began building the cathedral in Barcelona. He was the first Catalan ruler with his own coin.

When he died in 1017, his son succeeded him under his mother's reign.
