The Pantà de Sau or Embassament de Sau ( Spanish Pantano de Sau or Embalse de Sau ) is a reservoir of the river Ter in the province of Barcelona in the comarca of Osona .
The reservoir was completed in 1962 and represents an essential source of water supply for Catalonia . Due to the construction of the dam, the residents of the towns of Sant Romà de Sau, Sant Pere de Castanyadell, Santa Maria de Vilanova, Sant Andreu Bancells i Sant Martí de Querós had to move into the newly constructed Place Vilanova de Sau to be relocated.
The church of the village of Sant Romà de Sau from the 10th century has been preserved. The top of the church protrudes about two meters even when the reservoir is completely filled. In dry years such as 2005, the water level can drop so far that the church completely reappears.
The lake is surrounded by steep mountains with impressive rock formations. In the north these are the Cingles de Tavertes . The rock massif, which is named after the village of Tavertes on the massif, is at an altitude of 869 msnm and thus 600 meters above the reservoir, which is 260 meters above sea level. The rocks, which consist of red stone in the lower area and gray stone in the upper area, drop almost vertically. At the end of the massif there is a single ledge, the Puig de la Forca with a height of 750.55 meters.
To the east, behind the dam, rises the Montduis mountain at a height of 930 meters. Below this mountain lies the next reservoir of the Ter, the Pantà de Susqueda . On the west bank is the Parador de Sau, on a steep slope with a spectacular view over the lake. Further to the west is the former 11th century Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres . To the south are fertile valleys around the town of Vilanova de Sau. To the southeast lies a group of mountains around the Turó de Vaig Verd , which has a height of 1,187 meters.
The seat of the nautical club of Vic , the district town about 17 km away, is located on the lake . The lake is a local destination for anglers, paddlers and picnic visitors , especially on weekends . There is a public car park at the level of the Sant Romà de Sau church.
