The comarca of Tarragonès is located in the province of Tarragona of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia ( Spain ). The community association has an area of 318 km² and 256,730 inhabitants (2019). Almost 2/3 of the population live in the capital Tarragona . During a territorial reform in 1936, three new comarcas were formed from the Camp de Tarragona , one of which is Tarragonès.

location

The association of municipalities is located in the south of Catalonia. It borders in the west on the Comarca Baix Camp , in the north on Alt Camp , in the east on Baix Penedès and in the south on 45 kilometers on the coast of the Mediterranean . Together with the comarcas Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Baix Penedès, Conca de Barberà , and Priorat , the region forms the territory of Camp de Tarragona .

Tarragonès is located in a coastal plain of the Mediterranean on the Costa Daurada . Only in the northeastern part there are some elevations. The highest mountain is the 318 meter high la Mola . The lower reaches of the Francolí and Gaià rivers run through the comarca from north to south and flow into the Mediterranean in the area of the community association. In the municipality of Vespella, the Gaià is dammed by a dam.

A dense road network connects the places of the community association. The AP-7 / E-15 motorway crosses the comarca along the coastline. The port of Tarragona is a transshipment point for goods from all over the Mediterranean. There are marinas in Tarragona, Torredembarra and a smaller Salou. The railway line connects Tarragona with the major cities of Barcelona and Valencia.

economy

Long sandy beaches with fine sand have become a magnet for tourists from all over Europe. The cities of Torredembarra and Salou in particular have grown into tourist centers. The PortAventura World theme park is an attraction for guests far beyond the region. The construction boom in favor of industry and tourism have pushed agriculture back inland. It still plays an important role in the northeast. There are olives , wine , almonds, vegetables and hazelnuts grown. A significant industry has settled in Tarragona. The transshipment of goods is also an important industry in the port of Tarragona .
