The Baix Penedès is a comarca ( administrative unit ) in the province of Tarragona in the autonomous community of Catalonia ( Spain ). The community association has an area of 295.37 km² and 104,991 inhabitants (2019).

location

The association of municipalities is located in the southern part of Catalonia, between Barcelona and Tarragona, it borders in the west on the Comarca Tarragonès , in the northwest on Alt Camp, in the east on Alt Penedès and Garraf and in the south on the 13 km long coast of the Mediterranean . Together with the comarcas Alt Camp, Baix Camp , Conca de Barberà , Priorat and Tarragonès, the region forms the territory of Camp de Tarragona .

Baix Penedès is located in the south-western part of a depression, the plain of the Penedès , which borders on an area with mountain ranges in the west. In the northwest are the mountains of the Serra del Montmell .

economy

In the interior, the population lives mainly from agriculture and the service industry. The safari park Rioleón , near Albinyana, and the Mediterranean coast with its long beaches are of great importance for tourism .

traffic

Several motorways run through the community association. The E-90 from Martorell to Lleida , the E-15 Girona-Valencia and the C-22 from El Vendrell, along the coast to Barcelona . Two S-Bahn lines (C2 and C4 of the Rodalies ) connect the region with Barcelona. The Barcelona Airport (about 50 km) and the Reus airport (about 35 km) are within easy reach.
