The comarca Terra Alta is located in the province of Tarragona of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia ( Spain ). The community association has an area of 742 km² and 11,490 inhabitants (2019).

location

Terra Alta is located in the south-western part of Catalonia, about 60 km west of the provincial capital Tarragona . The association of municipalities borders in the northeast on the Comarca Ribera d'Ebre, in the southeast on Baix Ebre and in the west on the Autonomous Community of Aragon . Together with the comarcas Baix Ebre , Montsià and Ribera d'Ebre , the region forms the territory of Terres de l'Ebre .

The northern area of the Terra Alta is located in a fertile plateau , the Central Catalan Depression, with only a few elevations up to a maximum of 550 m. The south-eastern part is mountainous, here is the northern branch of the Ports de Tortosa-Beseit (nature park) with several mountain peaks of over 1,000 m, the Serra de Cavalls and Serra Pàndols . The highest point in the comarca is the Miranda de Terranyes with 1,193 m. The Riu Algars , a tributary of the Matarraña , which flows into the Ebro , forms a common border with Aragon in the west . The comarca is located in the catchment area of the Ebro, which flows around the community association in a wide arc from north to south to the east.

The Mediterranean climate with continental influence ensures dry, hot summers and dry, cold winters. The little rainfall falls mainly in spring and autumn.

economy

Terra Alta lives mainly from the production and processing of agricultural products. Are grown olives , fruit , cereal and almonds . The wine growing with its own designation of origin D.O. Terra Alta . Sheep and poultry farming are also noteworthy.
