The Comarca Segrià is a (district) in the autonomous community of Catalonia ( Spain ). It is the most populous comarca in the province of Lleida . Over two thirds of the population live in their capital, Lleida . The name of the comarca is derived from the Segre river of the same name.

location

The association of municipalities is located in the western part of Catalonia. It borders in the northeast on the Comarca Noguera , in the east on Pla d'Urgell and Garrigues , in the south on Ribera d'Ebre and in the west on the Autonomous Community of Aragon . Together with the comarcas Garrigues, Noguera, Segarra , Segrià and Urgell , the region forms the Ponent territory .

Segrià is located in the far west of a fertile plateau , the central Catalan depression. Only low hills characterize the landscape. The highest peaks are the mountains Punta de Mantmaneu (495 m) and Punta dels Escambron (500 m). The lower reaches of the Segre river flows through the comarca from northwest to southeast. The Segre feeds a network of artificial irrigation canals ( Canal de Urgell ), which also extends over the neighboring comarcas.

climate

The climate is dry with little rainfall, which falls mainly in spring. Summers are hot and winters are cold with frequent fog.

economy

Extensive irrigation led to intensive fruit and vegetable cultivation. Pasture farming (cows, sheep) as well as pig and poultry farming also play an important role.

The textile, shoe, paper, fertilizer and food industries are important. An iron foundry and an agricultural machinery factory are located here. Commerce and services are important in the capital, Lleida.
