The Comarca Gironès is located in the province of Girona of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia ( Spain ). The community association has an area of 575.5 km² and 193,908 inhabitants (2019).

location

The association of municipalities is located in the south-eastern part of Catalonia. Girona is also the capital of the comarca and the province of Girona. The district borders in the north on the comarca Pla de l'Estany and Alt Empordà , in the east on Baix Empordà , in the west on Selva and in the north-west on Garrotxa . Together with the comarcas Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, Garrotxa, Pla de l'Estany, Selva and Ripollès , the region forms the territory of Comarques Gironines .

Gironès lies in the interior of the Costa Brava , in a plain formed by the middle course of the river Ter and its tributaries. The Ter crosses the community from west to east. The Gavarres ridge, directly in front of the coast, separates the comarca from the Mediterranean . In the northwest lie the mountains of the Serra de Rocacorba.

economy

The district's economy is broad. In addition to agriculture and livestock farming, there are industrial companies in the textile, food, wood, chemical, graphic and electrical industries.

traffic

The important AP-7 / E-15 motorway crosses the comarca and connects Girona with Barcelona and France. The France - Barcelona railway line also runs through the municipality. The high-speed rail networks in Spain and France are currently being expanded. The Barcelona - Girona - Perpignan section was completed in 2011. The Girona airport is located 8 km south of Girona and destination airport for tourism of the Costa Brava.
