The Comarca Selva is an administrative unit in the provinces of Girona and Barcelona in the Spanish autonomous region of Catalonia . With the exception of the municipality of Fogars de la Selva , which belongs to the province of Barcelona, all municipalities are in the province of Girona.
location
The comarca is located just a few kilometers south of the provincial capital Girona . Barcelona is about 70 km southwest. In the north Selva borders on the Comarca Garrotxa , in the east on Gironès and Baix Empordà , in the southwest on the 28 km long coast of the Mediterranean , in the west on Osona , Vallès Oriental and Maresme . Together with the Comarcas Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, Garrotxa, Pla de l'Estany, Gironès and Ripollès , the region forms the Comarques Gironines territory .
The largest part of the comarca lies in the Selva Depression, which is enclosed on all sides by mountain ranges. In the center of the depression, in the area of the municipality of Vilobí d'Onyar, there is a crater about 4 km wide . Further volcanic formations can be found south of the crater. The Maar Camp dels Ninots represents an important fossil deposit. North of the river Ter lies the mountain range of the Serralada Transversal . In the west, the district has a share in the pre-coastal mountain ranges of Montseny and Guilleries, which are forested by oaks , beeches and sweet chestnuts . There are several mountain peaks of over 1000 m. The highest point is the summit of les Agudes (1706 m). In the south-west lies the Montnegre coastal mountain range . In the north, the river Ter crosses the Comarca from west to east, feeding the Pantà de Susqueda reservoir with a capacity of 223 million m³. The reservoir is used to generate electricity (200 million kWh) and to supply the region with drinking water. In the south, Selva extends over the coastal mountains of the Costa Brava with its steep cliffs to the Mediterranean Sea. The well-known coastal towns of Tossa de Mar, Lloret de Mar and Blanes are located on the 20 km long coastline.
traffic
Important transport links run through the district: the AP-7 / E-15 motorway (Barcelona – France), the parallel national road N-II and the Barcelona – Portbou railway line . The Girona-Costa Brava airport is also located in the district.
climate
The coast has a Mediterranean climate with little rainfall and mild temperatures in summer and winter. In the Selva Depression, the climate is humid, but with little rainfall and low temperature fluctuations. In the mountainous north there is frequent rainfall and temperatures are low.
vegetation
Over half of the area is covered by forest, hence the name (forest = kat. And span. Selva). On the Costa Brava there are predominantly holm oak and pine forests. In the rest of the area, depending on the altitude, there are cork oak , holm oak , chestnut and beech forests .
economy
Tourism is of great importance, mainly on the Costa Brava. The three seaside resorts of Tossa de Mar , Lloret de Mar and Blanes are known . There are marinas in Blanes and Cala Canyelles (near Lloret de Mar). Abundant thermal springs have also created spa baths in Caldes de Malavella, Santa Coloma de Farners. The spas in the municipalities of Sant Hilari Sacalm and Amer have ceased to operate. Due to the numerous mineral springs and their good quality, several bottling companies for mineral water have settled in the region.
In agriculture, grain, wine, hazelnuts and fruit are grown. Sheep and pig breeding are of lesser importance. In the comarca there are also numerous companies in the food, textile, paper, wood and metal industries.
