The comarca Baix Empordà (Spanish: Bajo Ampurdán ; German: Niederampurien ) is located in the province of Girona of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia ( Spain ). Baix Empordà was created in 1936 from the southern part of the historic county of Empordà (German: Ampurien ). The community association has an area of 702 km² and 134,359 inhabitants (2019).

location

The association of municipalities is located in the extreme east of Catalonia, it borders in the north on the Comarca Alt Empordà (German: Oberampurien ), in the west on Gironès , in the south on Selva and in the east on the 78 km long coast of the Mediterranean . Together with the comarcas Alt Empordà, Garrotxa , Gironès, Pla de l'Estany , Selva and Ripollès , the region forms the territory of Comarques Gironines .

Baix Empordà is on the Costa Brava . The northern part of the comarca lies in a plain traversed by the lower reaches of the Ter . Between the mountain ranges of the Montgrí massif and the Cabo Bagur , which juts out into the Mediterranean with its rugged coast, the Ter flows into the Mediterranean in a wetland. In the northeast of the Baix Empordà are the Medas Islands with a strictly protected underwater nature reserve. The southern part of the comarca is traversed by the northern foothills of the coastal mountains.

climate

The climate is Mediterranean - hot, dry summers and moderately cold winters. The highest amounts of precipitation occur in spring and autumn. During these times of the year there are also frequent strong, cold winds from the north, the Tramontana .

economy

The main industry on the coast is tourism. There is intensive irrigation farming on the rivers; maize, fruit and alfalfa are grown . Grains and feed are cultivated in areas with arid farming. Among other things, furniture is produced in the woodworking industry. There is also a notable food and metal processing industry.
