Castell-Platja d'Aro is a municipality in the comarca of Baix Empordà in the northeast of the Spanish region of Catalonia . It consists of the three districts Castell d'Aro, Platja d'Aro and s'Agaró ; the municipal administration is based in Platja d'Aro. Due to the location on the Costa Brava , the places are very touristy .

There are numerous small settlements on the outskirts, such as Mas Nou with the Hapimag holiday complex , which offer a spectacular view of the coast and a golf course.

The Camí de Ronda runs along the coast ; the path connects the main beach with numerous smaller beaches.

Castell d'Aro is located in the heart of the Costa Brava, 106 km north of Barcelona. It borders on Calonge to the north, Santa Cristina d'Aro to the west, Sant Feliu de Guíxols to the south, and the coast to the east. Castell-Platja d'Aro is located at the eastern end of the Vall d'Aro, a narrow valley that is drained by the Ridaura River and lies between the heights of the Cadiretes and Gavarres. Platja d'Aro was originally a small fishing village on the road connecting Palamós and Sant Feliu de Guíxols with a 2 km long beach. It is now mainly a tourist place with hotels and other tourist shops.

Prehistoric time

The first official document on Platja d'Aro in its original name Fanals d'Amunt dates back to 968. The origin of the Castle d'Aro lies in the castle of the Benedorminer. This castle was first documented in 1041. In 1585 a new church was built in Fanals de Baix, now Fanals d'Aro, around which a settlement developed. In 1774 this church was enlarged.

Modern

In the following centuries there was only one parish until 1858, when finally in Romanyà, Bell-lloc, Santa Cristina d'Aro and Solius, Castell d'Aro and Fanals d'Aro split off.

In 1962 the town was renamed from Fanals d'Aro to Platja d'Aro as part of the tourist development. The authorities moved from Castell d'Aro to Platja d'Aro.

Town twinning

The French town of Brive-la-Gaillarde in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region has been the twin town of Castell-Platja d'Aro since 2000 .
