Pals is a municipality in the autonomous region of Catalonia in Spain in the province of Girona , 105 kilometers northeast of Barcelona . It includes the three localities of Pals , Els Masos de Pals and Sa Punta (Platja de Pals) .
description
The name Pals comes from the Latin palus and means swamp area . This suggests that Pals was surrounded by lakes and swamps a long time ago.
The medieval old town, the Vila Vela , built on a hill , is a listed building. During the Spanish Civil War, the medieval city center was bombed by Francoist troops and completely destroyed. From 1950, on the initiative of the doctor Pi i Figueras and the mayor Pere Servia i Canto, the reconstruction of the town began, which gradually developed into a top tourist attraction.
At Sa Punta begins an approximately 10 km long sandy beach , which, interrupted by the mouth of the Ter , extends to L'Estartit .
Pals transmitter
Along the beach there was an antenna system with 12 masts , which was used by Radio Liberty as a transmitter from 1959 to 2001 . On March 22, 2006 these masts were blown up. The area of the former transmitter system is now a protected area .
