Oriol Servià i Imbers (born July 13, 1974 in Pals , Catalonia , Spain ) is a former Spanish automobile racing driver . In 1999 he became the master of the Indy Lights . He drove in the Champ Car series from 2000 to 2007 . In 2006 he was runner-up in this championship. From 2008 to 2016 he started, with interruptions, in the IndyCar Series . He has been Managing Director at Dragon Racing since 2015 .

Career

Servià began his motorsport career in karting in 1988 , where he was active until 1991. In 1993 he switched to the single-seater racing and was runner-up of the French Formula Renault Campus . In 1995 he started in the French Formula Renault and finished the season in sixth place. He also competed in the Eurocup Formula Renault and the French Porsche Carrera Cup . In 1996 Servià switched to the French Formula 3 championship . Starting for Winfield , he finished the season in fifth place overall and prevailed against Stéphane Sarrazin within the team . 1997 Servià denied his second season in the French Formula 3 championship for La Filière . Although he won a race, he fell back to eighth place in the overall standings and was defeated by his team-mate Franck Montagny . He also competed in a British Formula 3 race and finished sixth at the Macau Grand Prix .

In 1998 Servià moved to North American Indy Lights for Dorricott Racing . With two podium finishes, he finished the season in seventh place in the championship. 1999 Servià denied his second Indy Lights season for Dorricott Racing. He was on the podium five times and won the championship ahead of his teammate Casey Mears with 130 to 116 points. However, both drivers did not win the season.

In 2000 Servià switched to CART at PPI Motorsports and became a team-mate of Cristiano da Matta . With a third place as the best result, he finished the season in 15th place in the overall standings. Internally he was defeated by Matta with 60 to 112 points. In 2001 Servià competed in his second CART season for Sigma Autosport , which only entered with one vehicle. His best results were two fifth places and he finished the season in 19th place in the championship. In 2002 Servià started the season with PWR Championship Racing . After the first three races, he left the team and briefly moved to the Indy Racing League for Walker Racing . He tried to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 , but failed. He then returned to the CART and replaced Townsend Bell at Patrick Racing . At the end of the season, with a fourth place as the best result, he finished 16th in the drivers' standings.

In 2003 Servià stayed with Patrick Racing. With two second places and one third place, he achieved three podium finishes. At the end of the season he was seventh in the championship. After the championship was renamed Champ Car in 2004, Servià moved to Dale Coyne Racing , where he had changing teammates. He decided the team-internal duels against all team-mates for himself and finished the season with a third place in tenth place overall. In 2005 he started the season with Dale Coyne Racing. For the third race, Servià switched to Newman / Haas Racing to replace the injured Bruno Junqueira , who was out the rest of the season. He won the race at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve and finished six other races on the podium. At the end of the season he only had to admit defeat to his teammate Sébastien Bourdais and became runner-up.

After Junqueira's return, Servià moved to PKV Racing within the Champ Car in 2006 . With a third place he finished a race on the podium and finished eleventh in the championship. He left his teammate Katherine Legge , who was 16th, behind. In 2007 Servià was initially without a cockpit. After Paul Tracy was injured in the first race, he replaced it for the two following races for Forsythe Racing . He finished the races in second and fourth place. After Tracy was fit again, Servià got the other Forsysthe cockpit, in which he replaced Mario Domínguez . He finished another race in third on the podium but was replaced by David Martínez for the final two races of the season . Servià then switched back to PKV Racing, where Tristan Gommendy had run out of sponsorship funds. In the season finale he was again third. At the end of the season he finished sixth in the championship. In 2007 Servià also took part in a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series .

After the Champ Car merged with the IndyCar Series in 2008 , Servià switched to the IndyCar Series with his team, which from this season was called KV Racing Technology . He scored five finishes among the top five pilots and finished ninth in the championship. Although, unlike his teammate Will Power, he did not win a race, he prevailed against him within the team . In 2009 Servià did not receive a cockpit for a full season. At the Indianapolis 500 he competed for Rahal Letterman Racing . For four of the last five races of the season returned to Newman / Haas / Lanigan Racing and replaced Robert Doornbos . With a fourth place as the best result, he finished the season in 21st place overall.

After Servia in 2010 was without a cockpit, he returned in 2011 back into the IndyCar Series and entered again for Newman / Haas Racing. In the first five races he finished among the top ten pilots. At the seventh race weekend in West Allis , he finally achieved his first podium finish in the IndyCar Series in third place. He managed to surpass this result in Loudon and Baltimore with second place. With a total of three podium finishes, he finished the season in fourth place in the drivers' championship. In addition, Servià started a race in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).

After Newman / Haas Racing had stopped IndyCar racing at the end of the 2011 season, Servià switched to Dreyer & Reinbold Racing for the 2012 season , which was initially supported by Lotus during the season and started as Lotus - DRR . After the racing team was not satisfied with the Lotus engines, Dreyer & Reinbold Racing entered into a cooperation with Panther Racing and switched to Chevrolet engines. In the first race with the new engine, the Indianapolis 500 , he achieved fourth place. A race later in Detroit, he finished fifth and finished in the top five. Servià finished the season in 13th place with four top 5 placements. In 2013 Servià stayed with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, which continued to cooperate with Panther Racing. Since his team had withdrawn for financial reasons after the Indianapolis 500 , Servià was without a cockpit after the fifth race. He made it into the top 10 twice in the first five races and finished fourth in São Paulo . In the further course of the season he was used in seven races for Panther Racing. In two of these races he represented Ryan Briscoe , who was not ready for use due to other obligations or an injury. Servià was 22nd overall at the end of the season.

In 2014 , Servià did not find a permanent IndyCar cockpit. He completed four of the first five races for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Seventh place was his best result. He did not complete any other IndyCar races this year. For the first season of the FIA Formula E Championship , Servià then received a cockpit at Dragon Racing . Servià contested the first four races and always came in the points. Before the fifth race, Servià resigned as a racing driver for the racing team and took on the role of Managing Director . In the course of 2015 he competed again for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing for the Indianapolis 500. In addition, at the request of the family of the fatally injured Justin Wilson , he took over Wilson's cockpit at Andretti Autosport for the last race of the 2015 IndyCar Series . At the beginning of 2016 , Servià competed in an IndyCar race for the Penske team as a substitute for the health problem . In the further course of the season he competed for Schmidt Peterson with Marotti Racing for the Indianapolis 500 .
