Reports
background
After the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston , Scott Dixon led the drivers' standings with 25 points over Hélio Castroneves and 55 points over Simon Pagenaud , who had no more chance of winning the championship.
There were five changes in the starting field. Dario Franchitti dropped out after his serious accident in the previous race with a broken ankle and two vertebral fractures. Target Chip Ganassi Racing replaced him with Alex Tagliani , who last worked for Bryan Herta Autosport at the Honda Indy Toronto . EJ Viso was also unable to attend due to health reasons, as he had the flu. His Andretti cockpit was taken over by Carlos Muñoz , who was also last used in Toronto. Back then as an injury representative at Panther Racing . In addition, Muñoz took part in Lefty's Kids Club 100 , the Indy Lights race in Fontana, this weekend . He decided this for himself. There were also two scheduled changes. Pippa Mann took over the cockpit of Dale Coyne Racing from Mike Conway . She last drove this vehicle in the Pocono IndyCar 400 . JR Hildebrand replaced Luca Filippi at Bryan Herta Autosport. It was his second season outing for the racing team after the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma . Penske used a third vehicle again. As most recently with the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit , AJ Allmendinger was the driver of this vehicle. It was a one-time return for Allmendinger, as the third Penske vehicle, which will be used continuously from this race on, will be driven by Juan Pablo Montoya next season .
Together with the Indianapolis 500 and the Pocono IndyCar 400, the MAVTV 500 formed the Triple Crown . Had Tony Kanaan and Dixon won the race, the winner would have a bonus of 250,000 US dollars received.
With Ed Carpenter (once) a former winner entered this race.
training
In practice Will Power set the fastest lap ahead of Kanaan and James Hinchcliffe . The first three drivers set their best time at the beginning of the training. Powers Penske teammates Allmendinger and Castroneves finished fourth and fifth, so that Team Penske had all vehicles in the top five. Championship leader Dixon was one place behind Castroneves, his title opponent.
The training was interrupted twice. Initially, Mann lost the rear of her vehicle in the fourth corner. Takuma Satō later also had an accident in the same place. His vehicle was badly damaged. Mann and Satō were unharmed.
Qualifying
Qualifying took place in an individual time trial over two laps. Power achieved the fastest lap ahead of his teammates Castroneves and Allmendinger. Dixon finished seventh. Although it was Castroneves' turn before Power, Penske decided to give Power free rein. Since Dixon should go out after the two, Penske wanted to prevent Dixon from receiving the bonus point for pole position. It was Powers 32nd IndyCar pole position. So he drew level with Michael Andretti and together with him took seventh place in the all-time best list.
After the accidents in practice, Mann and Satō did not take part in qualifying because their vehicles could not be repaired in time. Justin Wilson did not set any time because he had stopped trying. Eight drivers, including Castroneves and Dixon, were moved ten positions back due to premature engine changes.
Final training
In the final training session, which took place under floodlights on Friday evening, Marco Andretti set the fastest time ahead of Castroneves and Carpenter. Dixon finished sixth. All drivers took part in the final training.
run
The start of the race was postponed by 10 minutes because the sun would have blinded the drivers at the entrance to the third corner shortly before it went down. The race took place on Saturday evening.
After Power retained the lead at the start, Sébastien Bourdais took the lead on lap 12. Castroneves and Ryan Hunter-Reay got off to a good start and soon made it into the leading lap, while Dixon was in midfield. The first pit stops took place under green flags, so that there were several changes in leadership. Hunter-Reay eventually took the lead for over 40 laps.
The first caution phase occurred on lap 71, as Sebastian Saavedra and Mann had an accident in the third corner. Saavedra had lost control of his vehicle and Mann was involved in an evasive maneuver. The drivers used the caution period for pit stops and Dixon improved to sixth place. However, he was slowed down by a bad restart from Power, who was driving in front of him, and he fell back into midfield. While Bourdais and Castroneves were dueling at the front, Muñoz, who had moved up to third place, lost control of his car and hit the wall on the second corner.
A few laps after the restart, there was a serious accident in the second corner on lap 111. Wilson lost control of his vehicle and was hit on the side by Tristan Vautier . Josef Newgarden and Oriol Servià collided during evasive maneuvers . James Jakes and Simona de Silvestro damaged their car. Only de Silvestro was able to resume the race. Wilson's cab broke twice on the side in the impact. Wilson suffered three pelvic fractures and one lung contusion in the accident. The fractures did not have to be operated on. In view of the fact that his chassis was broken in the accident, however, these were relatively minor injuries. All other involved were unharmed.
After the restart, Castroneves fell behind with balance problems. The Ganassi gained in this phase. Dixon passed Castroneves and Tagliani briefly took the lead. Most of the leading laps in this racing phase, however, were completed by Power. Castroneves changed his setup at the following pit stops under the green flag. Power was leading ahead of Dixon, Tagliani, Castroneves and Hunter-Reay. While the next stops took place under the green flag, the next yellow phase occurred. Carpenter slowed too much before he stopped. As a result, Allmendinger lost control of his vehicle and hit the fourth corner. In the meantime, Satō had failed with technical problems.
After the restart, Power led Dixon, Charlie Kimball , Castroneves and Tagliani. However, Tagliani spun 41 laps before the end in the second corner and triggered a caution period. He failed in the accident. Shortly before, Graham Rahal had given up with engine problems.
In the caution phase, Penske made a serious mistake. The team overlooked that the pit lane was closed and called Castroneves into the pits. For this he was given a drive-through penalty, which threw him back to ninth place. At the restart Castroneves drove up to first place. He damaged his front wing in a duel with Kimball and had to pit again. He fell out of the leadership lap.
While Pagenaud had given up with technical problems, Bourdais had an accident in the third corner which triggered a caution period. Shortly before that, Dixon's engine began to overheat. During the yellow phase, Dixon pitted several times and never lost a lap. Shortly after the restart there was another yellow phase because Hildebrand and Kimball had suffered engine damage. Shortly before the end, Hunter-Reay also gave up.
Power eventually won the race ahead of Carpenter, Kanaan, Hinchcliffe and Dixon. These five pilots were the only ones in the lead lap. Castroneves was sixth ahead of Andretti and de Silvestro. The already eliminated Hunter-Reay and Kimball completed the top 10. There were a total of 28 leadership changes.
Power, who won only the second time on an oval course, described the win as the most satisfying of his entire career. After Power had always been the overall leader in the last race of the season in the last three years and had lost the title in these races, he won the last race in the year in which he had no title chances.
Dixon thus decided the championship ahead of Castroneves and Pagenaud. It was his third title win after 2003 and 2008. He won all titles for Target Chip Ganassi Racing. Castroneves missed winning the title again. In his 16th IndyCar season, he finished second overall for the third time.
With nine to eight wins, the manufacturers' championship went to Chevrolet .
