James Jakes (born August 4, 1987 in Leeds ) is a British automobile racing driver . He competed in the IndyCar Series from 2011 to 2015 .

Career

In 2002, Jakes began his motorsport career in club racing, which he practiced until 2003. In 2003 he made his debut in formula racing and started the British Formula Renault series in the winter series and the Formula Palmer Audi autumn series . In 2004 Jakes drove both in the British Formula Renault, in which he finished 13th overall, and in the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup , where he reached 25th place. He also took part in a number of other Formula Renault championships. In 2005, Jakes stayed in the British Formula Renault and came third overall. In addition, Jakes started for some races in the national class of the British Formula 3 Championship and the Dutch Formula Renault. In 2006, Jakes switched to the British Formula 3 championship and was eighth in the overall standings. He started for Hitech Racing , for which he also took part in four races in the Formula 3 Euro Series . Jakes also finished sixth at the Macau Grand Prix .

In 2007 Jakes concentrated on his involvement in the Formula 3 Euro Series and drove for Manor Motorsport . He won a race at Magny-Cours and finished fifth in the overall standings. At the Macau Grand Prix, where Jakes started again, he finished seventh this year. Also in 2008 Jakes was active in the Formula 3 Euro Series, this time for the champion team ART Grand Prix . This season Jakes won the main race in Pau and finished 13th overall at the end of the season. Thus, Jakes did not build on the good results of the previous year and was also in the overall ranking behind his three teammates, of whom Nico Hülkenberg won the championship.

Nevertheless, Jakes was signed by Super Nova Racing for the GP2 Asia Series season 2008/2009 and finished in 16th place in the overall standings at the end of the season. In the GP2 Asia Series season 2009/2010 Jakes went again for Super Nova Racing at the start. After finishing third in the first race, he was replaced by Marcus Ericsson after the first race weekend . At the end of the season he finished 14th overall. In 2010 he started for Manor Racing in the new GP3 series . After a Hockenheim accident , he had to pause two race weekends with a ligament injury in his right arm. With two second places as the best results, he finished eighth in the overall ranking at the end of the season. He then made his debut at the season finale in the GP2 series and replaced the sick Álvaro Parente at Scuderia Coloni . At the end of the season he finished 31st overall.

In 2011, Jakes should start for Coloni in both the GP2 Asia and the GP2 series. After the first race weekend of the GP2 Asia Series season in 2011 , however, he broke the contract with Coloni and finished the season in 24th place overall. Instead, he took part in test drives of the IndyCar Series for Dale Coyne Racing at short notice and a little later received a contract for the IndyCar Series 2011 . At the Indianapolis 500 he failed to qualify. While his teammate Sébastien Bourdais crossed the finish line several times within the top 10, a 13th place was Jake's best result. At the end of the season he was 22nd in the championship. In 2012 , Jakes stayed with Dale Coyne Racing in the IndyCar Series, where he got a new teammate in Justin Wilson . Jakes finished in the top 10 twice. While Wilson reached 15th place, Jakes finished the season again in 22nd place.

In 2013 Jakes moved to Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing within the IndyCar Series . At the second race in Detroit , he achieved his first podium finish in the IndyCar Series with a second place. Overall, he made it into the top 10 three times this year. He finished the season in 19th place overall. With 294 to 319 points he lost to his teammate Graham Rahal . After a year off Jake returned in 2015 back into the IndyCar Series. He received a cockpit at Schmidt Peterson Motorsports . At the second race in Avondale he finished third. In the further course of the season, three more top 10 placements followed. He finished the championship in 16th place.
