The 2012 Edmonton Indy took place on July 22nd at Edmonton City Center Airport in Edmonton , Alberta , Canada and was the eleventh race of the 2012 IndyCar Series season .

Reports

background

After the Honda Indy Toronto , Ryan Hunter-Reay led the drivers' standings with 34 points ahead of Will Power and with 46 points ahead of Hélio Castroneves . Among the engine manufacturers, Chevrolet led with 12 points ahead of Honda and with 41 points ahead of Lotus .

Each pilot had 120 seconds to press the push-to-pass button for the race .

Ryan Briscoe competed in an IndyCar Series race for the 100th time at this Indy.

With Sébastien Bourdais , Scott Dixon , Power (twice each) and Justin Wilson (once), all previous winners competed in this Indy.

training

In the first training the overall ranking leader Hunter-Reay was noticed with an unsportsmanlike nature. He pushed James Jakes off at Turn 12 and showed him the middle finger. As a punishment, the race control held on for eight minutes in the pit lane. Simon Pagenaud set the fastest lap ahead of Mike Conway and Wilson. Pagenaud undercut last year's pole time by around two seconds. The second training was interrupted four times. First Wilson spun in Turn 5, then there was an almost collision between Power and Castroneves. Castroneves had braked and spun in front of the first corner, while Power drove out of the pits and was only barely able to evade his teammate. The third interruption was triggered by Charlie Kimball by driving into a wall of tires. Conway's roll-out was responsible for the fourth interruption. Castroneves set the fastest lap and beat Pagenaud's time from the first practice session. Dixon finished second, 0.0027 s behind the leader. Conway took third place again. The first 18 pilots were within half a second.

In the third practice session the track dried up after the morning rain and the times got better towards the end of the session. In the initial phase, Josef Newgarden triggered an interruption with a slip into the grass in the eleventh corner. Dario Franchitti set the fastest lap ahead of Dixon and Power. Again the fastest 18 drivers were within half a second.

Qualifying

The first part of the time training was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. In the first group Power drove the fastest lap of the entire qualifying, in the second group Hunter-Reay was the fastest driver.

In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. In this section parts of the track were wet, so the pilots used intermediates. Takuma Satō drove Satō the best time. In the last section, the so-called Firestone Fast Six, Hunter-Reay achieved the fastest lap under dry conditions ahead of Franchitti, Briscoe, Satō, Alex Tagliani and Castroneves. Hunter-Reay received the bonus point and the prize money for pole position , but due to an early engine change he started the race from eleventh place. It was Hunter-Reay's first pole position since the 2004 West Allis Champ Car race .

In addition to Hunter-Reay, Power and Oriol Servià were also moved ten positions back due to an early engine change. Dixon and Simona de Silvestro also received a penalty transfer of ten places. Both were already using their sixth engine of the season. However, there was an engine limit of five engines for the season. The Penske team stated that Power's engine change was strategically conditioned, as Power's two title rivals, Dixon and Hunter-Reay, also received a penalty and a new stage could be used. The Hunter-Reay engine change was made as a precautionary measure as his Andretti Autosport teammate James Hinchcliffe had suffered an engine failure the previous race weekend.

Final training

In the final practice session on Sunday morning, Dixon was the fastest driver ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Conway.

run

At the start Franchitti initially kept the lead, Briscoe lost second place to Tagliani, who slowed down to Briscoe. One lap later, Tagliani managed to pass Franchitti at the same point. Briscoe was then overtaken by Satō and Castroneves. Power, who, together with Castroneves and Hunter-Reay, was the only driver to start on the harder tires, improved from 17th to 13th place on the first lap. While the first ten positions initially remained unchanged, there were some changes behind them.

During the first pit stop phase, Tagliani briefly lost his lead, but took it back after his competitors stopped. Castroneves overtook Franchitti and Satō at the pit stop. Power came back onto the track at the pit exit right in front of Hunter-Reay. Hunter-Reay complained to Race Director Beaux Barfield about Power's overtaking maneuver after the race , which had not been sanctioned.

On the 44th lap, Jakes was the first pilot to drop out. Jakes had a broken shock absorber. At this point all drivers were still within the lead lap. Before the second pit stops began, Power went past Briscoe to sixth position behind Tagliani, Castroneves, Satō, Franchitti and Graham Rahal and caught up with the first five drivers.

During the second pit stops, Castroneves pitted on lap 51. Tagliani and Satō followed a lap later. With a good first lap on the new tires, Castroneves managed to get back on track ahead of Tagliani and take the lead. Satō kept third place. Power stopped on lap 54 and improved to fourth position.

Tagliani fell behind Satō, Power and Rahal in the final phase with degrading tires. While Power drove in a fuel-efficient manner, Satō caught up with the leading Castroneves and was right behind him from the 60th lap. At this point, Castroneves had twice as many seconds left for the push-to-pass system as Satō and thus had an advantage in the duel. Satō put pressure on Castroneves, but he did not try to overtake.

In the final phase, Servià (technical problem) and Pagenaud (contact) were still out. There was no yellow phase in the entire race, which meant that some drivers had to save fuel. The last street course race without caution was in 2007 at the Champ Cars in Portland. In the IndyCar Series, a race without a yellow phase took place on the oval in Fort Worth in 2011.

Castroneves eventually won the race ahead of Satō. Castroneves scored his first victory at the Edmonton Indy after the race management revoked him in 2010 with a controversial decision. Satō achieved his best result in the IndyCar Series with a second place. Power came third in front of Rahal, Tagliani and Franchitti. Hunter-Reay finished seventh after an overtaking maneuver in the closing stages against Briscoe. Briscoe, Wilson and Dixon completed the top 10.

Hunter-Reay kept the lead in the drivers' championship. Castroneves took second place from Power, who was now third. The places in the manufacturers' standings remained unchanged.
