Bryan Clauson (born June 15, 1989 in Carmichael , California - † August 7, 2016 in Lincoln , Nebraska ) was an American racing car driver . He won the USAC National Drivers Championship in 2010, 2011 and 2012 .

Career

Clauson began his motorsport career in 2004 in midget / sprint car racing. In 2007 he switched to touring car racing and competed in six races in the ARCA Racing Series . He won a race and finished the season in 32nd place overall. He also made his debut in the NASCAR Busch Series in 2007 . For Chip Ganassi Racing he competed in a Dodge to five races and was 76th in the drivers' championship. In 2008 he stayed with Chip Ganassi Racing in the now renamed Nationwide Series championship. He completed 21 races and started from pole position once . With a fifth place as the best result, he finished 27th overall at the end of the season. In 2008 Clauson also took part in midget / sprint car races again. In 2009 and 2010 he only competed in these races. In 2010 he won the USAC National Drivers Championship .

In return for his title win, Clauson received $ 300,000 in support to compete in the Indy Lights oval races in the 2011 season . On his formula racing debut, he started for Sam Schmidt Motorsports . He finished his first season with a third place as the best result in twelfth place. In addition, Clauson continued to compete in midget / sprint car races and defended the USAC National Drivers Championship.

In 2012 , Clauson initially took part in test drives in the IndyCar Series for Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing . He used his USAC title bonus from the previous season for a start at the Indianapolis 500 . He retired early in the race. He was then given the opportunity to participate in two Indy Lights races at Fan Force United . He finished both in tenth place. He also continued to take part in midget / sprint car races. He became the overall winner of the USAC National Drivers Championship for the third time in 2012.

From 2013 to 2016 Clauson competed in various midget / sprint car races. In 2015 he also returned to the IndyCar Series and received a cockpit for the Indianapolis 500 at Jonathan Byrd's Racing .

In 2016, Clauson planned to compete in a total of 200 automobile races. Primarily in midget / sprint car races, but also in the Indianapolis 500 . For the IndyCar race, he again received a cockpit from Jonathan Byrd's Racing. The mission was carried out in cooperation with Dale Coyne Racing . In the meantime, Clauson took the lead in the race and finished in 23rd place. On August 6th, Clauson had a serious accident in a midget car race, his 116th automobile race that year, at Belleville High Banks Speedway in Belleville , Kansas . He died the following day at the age of 27 from injuries sustained in the accident.

In memory of Clauson, Dale Coyne regular driver Conor Daly drove in an IndyCar race with his number 88 after his death.
