history

In 1901, John Francis Dodge and Horace Elgin Dodge moved with their brothers Dodge Bicycle and Machine Factory to Detroit , Michigan . Their ball bearings and other parts they produced were urgently needed by the still young automotive industry. They also designed parts for the early Oldsmobile .

In 1902 the Dodge brothers got together with Henry Ford , who asked for help in financing his own automobile factory. With the financing, the Dodge brothers enabled the start of the Ford Motor Company , they also manufactured parts for the early Fords and thus achieved mutual financial benefits.

From 1914 to 1927 the company was called Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company . In 1914 the Dodge brothers started their own automobile factory. The first models were similar to the then famous Ford T , but had some improvements, such as: B. Electric starters (opposite the "T" hand crank) and became popular as mid-range vehicles. The new Dodge were a commercial success.

From 1917 Dodge also built medium-heavy trucks for the US Army in World War I and, after the end, also for civilian use. In 1925, Dodge was bought by the Dillon and Read Company for $ 146 million , the largest financial transaction in history at the time . Dillon and Read sold Dodge to Chrysler on July 31, 1928 .

The Dodge brand served the medium-priced segment between the other brands Plymouth and DeSoto and produced trucks and buses in addition to cars. When the oil crisis hit the USA in 1973, the models were too large and overpowered for buyers' needs, so that from then on models from the Chrysler brand were also sold, which only differed in details. After the merger with Chrysler, Daimler tried to establish the Dodge brand in Europe and began sales in 2003. The Dodge Caliber was sold in Austria and Germany from June 2006 . The brand was unknown to buyers in Europe, so large discounts had to be granted. In Mexico, Dodge started trying to sell the Trazo C , a sister model of the Nissan Tiida , under the Trazo sub-brand . Due to the low response, Dodge discontinued this brand again in the following year.

Since 2010

From 2010 the Dodge brand was repositioned. The successful Ram Pick-Ups division was spun off into the new Ram brand , which also adopted the brand logo with the well-known ram's head in the coat of arms. The Dodge Viper models were spun off into the new, independent brand Viper. From then on, Dodge models bore the “Dodge” logo with two inclined racing stripes, which were intended to symbolize the brand's sportiness.

With the takeover of the Chrysler Group and thus also of the Dodge brand by Fiat, sales of the brand on the European markets were officially discontinued, although dealers continue to import considerable numbers of vehicles from the USA themselves. These models include the Dodge Journey , Dodge Avenger, Dodge Grand Caravan , Dodge Magnum , Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger and also the neo-muscle cars Dodge Challenger R / T and Dodge Charger R / T z. Some with Hemi engines and full-size SUVs like the Dodge Durango and the Ram pick-ups. The Fiat Freemont is based on the Dodge Journey.

The new Dodge Dart (from 2013) in the USA has the same technical basis as the Alfa Romeo Giulietta . However, there are major differences between the two models from Alfa Romeo and Dodge, e.g. B. regarding the engine and the chassis. The models for Europe are also available with diesel engines , while the models in the USA are equipped with larger gasoline engines.
