Except for the trademark, grille and rear lights, the first generation Stratus was identical to the Chrysler Cirrus and the 1996 Plymouth Breeze .

The design of the Stratus corresponded to the cab-forward philosophy introduced with the Dodge Intrepid with a long wheelbase, tight overhangs and a passenger cabin that extends far forward.

Dodge Stratus (1999-2000)

The Stratus was powered by a 134 hp two-liter in-line four-cylinder with 16 valves, coupled with a five-speed gearbox or a four-speed automatic; alternatively there was a 2.5-liter V6 from Mitsubishi with four-speed automatic or a 2.4-liter twin-camshaft four-cylinder. A basic model and the Stratus ES with upscale equipment were offered.

In 1999 the Stratus received slight external modifications.

Around 450,000 copies were made by the time production was discontinued in 2000.

Saloon (2000-2006)

The Stratus was renewed in the summer of 2000 and has been based on the Chrysler JR platform ever since; its counterpart was the Chrysler Sebring , a Plymouth variant no longer existed as the brand was abandoned in 2001.

The slightly grown second Stratus was powered by a 2.4-liter in-line four-cylinder or a 2.7-liter V6 now with in-house engines.

At the beginning of 2004, the Stratus sedan received a slight facelift with a higher radiator grille and modified front apron.

In May 2006 the production of the Stratus sedan was stopped.

In Argentina, the Dodge Stratus Sedan was still produced in a simpler and slightly redesigned version. However, this was mainly only intended for export to other South American and Central American countries.

Coupé (2000-2005)

The successor to the Dodge Avenger also debuted in the summer of 2000. Although it shared the name with the Stratus sedan, it was based on a different platform and was related to the third generation Mitsubishi Eclipse .

Dodge Stratus Coupe (2004-2005)

The Stratus Coupe was also powered by engines other than the sedan, both of which came from Mitsubishi, namely a 2.4-liter in-line four-cylinder and a three-liter V6.

At the beginning of 2004, the coupé was also slightly modified.

Production of the Stratus Coupé ended at the end of 2005, while the sedan was not discontinued until mid-2006.
