The first Dodge Durango was introduced shortly after the introduction of the second generation Dodge Dakota on whose platform it was based. During the late 1980s, Chrysler designers suggested building an SUV based on the Dakota pickup ; the project was abandoned at the time, however, in favor of the Jeep Grand Cherokee . The Durango has a sturdy ladder frame construction with an attached body that can transport up to seven passengers and has traction for up to 4.0 tonnes of trailer load. The 4.7-liter PowerTech - V8 replaced the 5.2-liter engine from model year 2000th In the same year a high-performance version with the type designation R / T with all-wheel drive and a 5.9-liter engine was brought out.

The second generation of the Durango appeared in the fall of 2003 shortly before the launch of the new Dodge Dakota . As with the Dakota, there were many similarities with the large Dodge Ram pickup , such as the ladder frame. The new generation was 7 inches (about 18 cm) longer, 2 inches (about 5 cm) wider and 3 inches (about 8 cm) higher than the previous model. Chrysler had introduced its own variant of this model, the Chrysler Aspen , for the 2007 model year .
Facelift
In April 2006, a revised version of the Durango made its debut at the Dallas Auto Show for the 2007 model year to counter a decline in sales. The bonnet, the radiator grille, the front lighting units as well as the bumpers and rims were all redesigned. In the interior, the controls for the air conditioning had been revised, and the second and third row seats had been redesigned. The equipment has been expanded to include ESP , a rear parking assistant , automatic tire pressure control and a "one-touch" flashing system. The technical changes were limited to a newly designed vehicle floor and a revision of the electronics.
From the end of 2008, the Durango was also briefly available in a hybrid version. This was the Advanced Hybrid System 2 developed jointly with GM in conjunction with the Chrysler Hemi V8 engine . Only a few weeks after the start of production of the hybrid model, the entire production of the Durango and the parallel Chrysler Aspen was stopped due to lack of demand. Due to overproduction, both models were still available as new cars for a while until mid-2009.

The third generation of the Dodge Durango has been available on the US market since autumn 2010. The car was completely redesigned with almost unchanged dimensions - with the exception of a vehicle height that is about 10 cm lower. The model is based on the same platform as the contemporary Jeep Grand Cherokee .
As with all Dodge vehicles, the V6 engine is Chrysler's new "Pentastar" unit with significantly more power, so that the smaller V8 engine was omitted. The 5.7 liter HEMI -V8 in the Durango R / T has cylinder deactivation . Both versions are optionally available with all-wheel drive .
Facelift
In the 2014 model year, some minor changes were made to the design (daytime running lights in LED version, brand-typical rear with all-round red lighting (LED)). In the interior, the cockpit has been significantly redesigned and now offers a 5 "or 8" infotainment system (uConnect) and a central 7 "screen with flexible display of e.g. speedometer, consumption or sound system.
The biggest change is the introduction of an 8-stage automatic in all models, which has a positive effect on driving characteristics and consumption.
SRT
The Durango has been available in an SRT version since the end of 2017 . A 6.4 liter Hemi gasoline engine with 354 kW (482 hp) takes over the drive.
SRT Hellcat
For the 2021 model year, Dodge presented the Durango with the 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine from the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk . With 529 kW (720 PS), the SRT Hellcat has an output of ten PS more than the Grand Cherokee and replaces it as the most powerful SUV in series production.
