Manufacturer: Dodge
Production period: 1981 – today
Previous model: Dodge D series
Successor: Ram 1500 - Ram 5500

The Dodge Ram is an automobile model ( pick-up ) of Chrysler , which is sold mainly in the United States and Canada. Under this name, the vehicle was first launched in 1981 and was part of the Dodge D series .

Until the early 1990s, Dodge pickups were considered boring and unremarkable, even in the Midwest. This changed suddenly with the 1994 series. In particular, the now significantly larger and separate grill was a new trademark, which was also retained in the following model series.

The car is manufactured in different locations: in the Saltillo Truck Assembly in Saltillo , Mexico , in the Saint Louis Assembly North in Missouri , and in the Warren Truck Assembly in Michigan .

Ram has been an independent division of Chrysler Group LLC since 2010 and is only responsible for pick-up production. This change also entails a change in the brand logo. Ram now has the ram's head with the corresponding RAM lettering. The Dodge division is now only responsible for car production.

Outwardly, this generation was similar to the previous Dodge D series, the body was only slightly redesigned. The versions 150 with a half load, 250 with a ¾, and 350 with one tonne payload were available.

Improved versions followed in 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988 ( intake manifold injection ) and 1989 (improved engines). In 1991 the design of the radiator grille was revised, and improved engines were installed again from 1992.

Although this generation was quite popular, sales were disappointing when compared to the Ford F-Series and its rival General Motors , as fewer than 100,000 units were sold for most of its years of production.

As a body shape, it was offered as a regular cab (3-seater), extended cab (5 or 6-seater) and double cab. The short or long box was always available for the loading area, although the short box for the double cab was slightly shorter than for the extended version. There were also differences in the extended version, such as: B. the possibility of a suicide door on the driver's side or the omission of the same. The curb weight of the car is given as 2400–2800 kg.

From 1995 a version with a natural gas engine was also offered.

The second generation was a great commercial success with sales of 100,000 (1993), 240,000 (1994), 280,000 (1995) and almost 400,000 units in 1996. In 1999, more than 400,000 units were sold for the first time. When Ford and General Motors brought out revised competing models that partially adopted the design of the Dodge Ram, sales of the Dodge Ram fell sharply, but were able to increase again to 350,000 units in 2001.

The grille was enlarged again, and the built-in Cummins ISB diesel engine was included in Ward's 10 Best Engines list in 2004. The curb weight is given as 2200–2600 kg.

The third generation was an even bigger success than its predecessor, from an economic point of view, with 400,000 copies sold in 2002 and almost 450,000 in 2003.

The performance of the two V8 engines has been increased significantly. The 4.7 liter V8 last developed 231 kW (314 hp) and the 5.7 liter Hemi V8 now developed 283 kW (385 hp). At the same time, Dodge stated that it had reduced fuel consumption a little.
