Previous model Dodge 024

The Dodge Charger from 1983 to 1987 was a sports coupe based on the compact car Dodge Omni .

With the 1983 model year, the Dodge 024 was renamed Dodge Charger, the Plymouth parallel model was now called Turismo . The basic version included a 1.7-liter gasoline engine from Volkswagen , later a 1.6-liter engine from Peugeot , a 2.2 Charger and, from spring 1983, the Shelby Charger with an output of 80 kW (109 Hp) brought 2.2-liter engine. All engines had four cylinders. Carroll Shelby had recently started working closely with Dodge, and the Dodge Shelby Charger was a more powerful and sportier version of the Charger. According to the factory specifications, the Shelby Charger required 8.5 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h.

In 1984 the Charger received a facelift with a new front section and twin headlights (but not the Shelby Charger, which also had a simpler grille) and a new hood. The vehicle length increased from 4387 mm to 4440 mm. The previously existing third side window gave way to a particularly wide C-pillar. The 2.2-liter four-cylinder was now also available in an 82 kW (112 hp) version for an additional charge. The same machine was standard in the Shelby Charger, which, fitted with new front and rear spoilers, achieved a drag coefficient (c w ) of 0.37.

From the 1985 model year, the Shelby Charger was powered by the 2.2-liter in a 109 kW (148 PS) turbo version. Four different paint finishes were now available instead of just the colors silver and Santa Fe blue, as was previously the case. In 1987 the 1.6-liter base engine was discontinued. Charger production ended with the 1987 model year. A total of around 204,000 copies of this model had been produced since 1981, of which 15,803 were Shelby Chargers with a naturally aspirated and 17,389 with a turbo engine.
