In the 1965 model year, Dodge launched the Dodge Monaco , a two-door hardtop coupé in the full-size class, to compete with the personal luxury cars of other brands, such as the Ford Thunderbird .
history
In the 1965 model year, Dodge introduced the Monaco 500 as the brand's top model, which was based on the full-size Dodge Polara / Dodge 880 models , but was only available as a two-door hardtop coupé with more sophisticated equipment and larger engines. The Monaco was intended as a competitor to mid-range personal luxury cars such as the Pontiac Grand Prix and the Ford Thunderbird . The standard equipment included a center console, clock, three-spoke steering wheel, special hubcaps and a padded dashboard. The Monaco was powered by a 6.3-liter V8 with 315 hp, a 6.8-liter with 340 hp or a seven-liter V8 with 365 hp. Dodge sold 13,200 units.
In 1966 Dodge restructured its full-size model range. There was now a basic series, the Polara, and a better-equipped series, the Monaco. Within the Monaco series, which was available as a hardtop coupé, sedan with or without a B-pillar, and as a five-door station wagon, the special hardtop coupé, now known as the Monaco 500, again served as the top version. A 6.3-liter V8 with 270 or 325 hp (the latter in the Monaco 500 series) and a new 7.2-liter V8 with 365 hp were available in 1966.
In 1967 the grill and chrome trim parts were slightly retouched, as was in 1968. In the same year, the two 6.3-liter V8s with 290 and 300 hp were specified.
