The first Intrepid was based on the Chrysler Group's LH platform and was closely related to the Chrysler Concorde , New Yorker and LHS models , as well as the Eagle Vision, which were produced at the same time . There was no Plymouth variant.

The Intrepid was presented at the Detroit Auto Show in early 1992. The design followed the Cab Forward philosophy propagated by Chrysler for the first time and featured a long wheelbase, relatively short overhangs and a passenger cabin with a correspondingly short bonnet that extended far forward. The Intrepid soon went into series production as the 2003 model, with production at a Chrysler plant in Canada.

The Basic and ES versions were offered with a 3.3-liter V6 or, for a surcharge, with a 3.5-liter V6 with 24 valves, each in conjunction with a four-speed automatic. The ES model variant offered a firmer chassis, rear disc brakes, a leather steering wheel and 16-inch aluminum rims.

In 1995, the output of the 3.3-liter engine was increased from 114 to 120 kW (163 hp), and the automatic system was revised for smoother gear changes.

From model year 1996, the 3.5-liter engine was part of the standard equipment in the ES variant.

In the 1997 model year, the “Sport” model was presented as the third model in the Intrepid range, with a 3.5-liter V6, a new four-speed automatic with Steptronic function, electrically adjustable driver's seat, sports hubcaps and leather steering wheel and gear knob.

Dodge produced a total of 644,000 units of the first generation Intrepid.

The second-generation Intrepid made its debut in the 1998 model year and featured a modernized, rounder Cab Forward design with slightly increased dimensions and increased interior space.

New light-alloy V6 engines were used, which offered more power but consumed less than their predecessors: a unit with 2.7 liters displacement that developed 149 kW (203 hp), and one with 3.2 liters and 164 kW (223 PS). The former powered the base model and the 3.2-liter engine the Intrepid ES (the sport version was canceled after just one year). The engines were again coupled with four-speed automatic transmissions, with the ES with an additional manual shift function.

In 1999 there were detailed changes to the interior (the fabrics, the covers and the carpets), and all models received improved anti-roll bars.

From model year 2000, the basic model was named Intrepid SE. The range also included the sporty Intrepid R / T version with the revised, 180 kW (245 PS) 3.5-liter V6 engine used in the previous model.

In the 2003 model year, the R / T was replaced by the Intrepid SXT with 186 kW (253 hp) 3.5 l V6.

In the summer of 2004, Dodge stopped manufacturing the Intrepid. This also ended the 24-year era of front-wheel drive in this class.
