The Dodge Shadow was a front-wheel drive sedan of the lower middle class produced by the US automobile manufacturer Dodge from 1986 to 1994. The Shadow was based on the Chrysler Group's P platform (a shortened version of the K platform ) and was therefore a sister model of the Plymouth Sundance , from which it differed only in minimal details. In Germany, the three-door version of the Shadow was offered under the name Chrysler ES for a few years .
Model history
In the early summer of 1986 Dodge presented the Shadow as a new, compact model in the lower middle class with four doors and a tailgate; a three-door followed in the course of the year. Initially, there was only one equipment variant on offer, powered by a 2.2-liter four-cylinder with or without a turbocharger , each with a five-speed gearbox or three-speed automatic. A sporty ES package was available for the three-door model at an additional cost and included aluminum rims and wide tires.
In 1988, the ES package was expanded to include a rear spoiler, a front apron with integrated fog lights and decorative strips.
In 1989, all Shadow models received a new grille in the typical Dodge design with two crossed struts. The previous turbo engine was replaced by a 2.5-liter turbo with 145 hp, and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 101 hp was added to the range. The chassis of the ES with turbo engine was designed a little tighter.
The Shadow ES was only available for model year 1990 with a 177 hp version of the 2.2 liter turbo engine.
From 1991 the Shadow program included a slimmed-down basic model version called Shadow America, the regular Shadow model and the Shadow ES, which was promoted to its own model variant. New to the range was a convertible variant that was only available with the 2.5-liter or its turbo-charged variant.
From model year 1992 a three-liter V6 was available for the Shadow ES at an additional cost.
In 1993 the Shadow America was discontinued as was the turbo engine. An ABS was added as a new extra .
The cabriolet was no longer available for the 1994 model year.
A total of 670,000 copies of the Shadow were built (29,500 of which were convertibles).
