Dodge Lancer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dodge Lancer was a mid-range model offered by the US automobile manufacturer Chrysler from 1961 to 1962 as a sister model of the Plymouth Valiant at the same time. The Valiant was an independent brand for the 1960 model year and then traded as Plymouth. The namesake of the Lancer was offered from 1984 to 1989, this was a five-door hatchback sedan with front-wheel drive.

For the first time, Dodge used the name Lancer as a nickname for all hardtop and convertible models based on the Dodge Coronet , Royal and Custom Royal in the model years 1955 to 1959.

Until 1959, the Plymouth and Dodge brands were combined in a joint sales network. In 1960 this changed, the brands had to be sold separately. The Dodge representatives were not exactly happy with this solution. What they were missing was the Plymouth Valiant , which was successfully introduced at the end of 1959 , a, in American terms, compact middle-class car.

For the 1961 model year, the Dodge Lancer made its debut as the only cosmetically modified sister model of the Plymouth Valiant. Two and four-door sedans, station wagons and two-door hardtop coupés were available.

The Lancer was powered by an in-line six-cylinder with a displacement of 2.8 or 3.7 liters. The 2789 cc six-cylinder made 101 hp, the 3682 cc engine with single carburettor 145 hp. In the so-called Hyper-Pak version with four-way carburetor and sports exhaust, the small six-cylinder had 148, the 3682 cc engine 195 gross SAE horsepower; Top speed of the different models: Lancer 2789 cm³ - 145 km / h / Lancer 2789 cm³ Hyper-Pak 160 km / h / Lancer 3682 cm³ - 155 km / h / Lancer 3682 cm³ Hpyer-Pak - 170 km / h. There was the Dodge Lancer with 3-speed steering wheel shift, 3-speed stick shift and with the well-known three-speed Torqueflite automatic with push-button shift on the dashboard. Power steering was available on request.

There were two equipment variants of the Dodge Lancer, the simple one was called the Lancer 170, the luxurious Lancer 770. From 1962 the sporty two-door Dodge Lancer GT supplemented the model range.

This car was also assembled in Europe, in Schinznach in Switzerland at AMAG Automobil- und Motoren AG . These cars were of better quality, these models can be recognized by their badge with the addition Montage Schinznach .

1962 was the last year of production for the Dodge Lancer. The car could not be sold as hoped, in 1961 74733 and 1962 64271 units. There was never a successor, which made the Dodge Dart the smallest Dodge. This model was already available in 1960 parallel to the Dodge Lancer.

The Dodge Lancer and Plymouth Valiant was one of the last creations of the dedicated designer Virgil Exner .

From 1961 to about 1963 the Lancer was marketed in South Africa as the De Soto Rebel.

The Dodge Lancer presented for model year 1985 was based on the extended platform of the Chrysler K-Cars and was the sister model of the Chrysler LeBaron GTS , from which it differed only in details. A basic model and the Lancer ES were offered with upgraded equipment (electronic dashboard, rear seat bench that can be folded down, etc.). Chrysler's 2.2-liter in-line four-cylinder with or without turbocharger (100 or 148 hp) in combination with a five-speed sports transmission or three-speed automatic transmission provided the propulsion.

In 1986, Chrysler's new 2.5 liter four-cylinder was added to the range as an additional engine.

In 1987 and 1988 there were only minor changes to the equipment. For the 1988 model year, however, the Dodge Lancer Shelby, which was only available in the exterior colors white, red or black, was released with a 177 hp 2.2 l turbo engine with intercooler, 5-speed manual gearbox, spoilers on the front and rear and rocker panels. (Shelby had already offered a Shelby Lancer on his own in 1987. )

In 1989, a 152 hp 2.5 l turbo engine replaced the previous 2.2 liter turbo with 148 hp; the intercooled 177 hp version of the latter remained available in the Shelby Lancer.

Production of the Lancer ran out in the summer of 1989; up to then about 137,000 pieces were built, 487 of them Dodge Lancer Shelby.
