The Mitsubishi 3000 GT is a sports car produced by the Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors . It was built in Nagoya (Japan) from summer 1990 to mid-2000 . In other countries this sports car is also known as the GTO .

It is largely identical to the Dodge Stealth . The Toyota Supra , the Nissan 300ZX and the Honda NSX can be seen as direct competitors .

The top version of the sports coupé, which was offered in Europe as the 3000 GT and in the USA as the VR4, combines innovative technical systems for the 1990s such as all-wheel steering , electronically controlled shock absorbers and an active front spoiler and rear wing . Together with all-wheel drive and anti-lock braking system , this should serve in particular for driving safety.

Model history

Sister model for the US market: Dodge Stealth (1990–1996)

The first version (with pop-up headlights ) was built from summer 1990 to autumn 1994, the second version from late 1994 to mid-2000.

In 1995 and 1996, the second generation was sold in the USA with an electric metal folding roof (similar to the later Mercedes-Benz SLK ). This Spyder model has - in order to compensate for the additional weight resulting from the roof structure - with a boost pressure of 0.1 bar, 239 kW (325 PS). Based on bodies delivered from Nagoya without a tailgate, it was equipped with the electro-hydraulic roof at ASC (formerly American Sunroof Corporation, later American Specialty Cars).

In Germany there was a Beckenbauer Edition in 1994/1995 , for which Franz Beckenbauer was the godfather and appeared as an advertising figure. This small edition of 30 3000 GTs of the first generation was painted in Lamborghini yellow and came with a Remus sports exhaust, OZ Futura rims, and a C-Netz telephone. All 30 were signed by Beckenbauer.

The 3000 GT was built in three versions: the standard version, the VR4 version and the SL version. The SL version is the luxury version, which is characterized by leather interior and a glass roof. The VR4 version is the most powerful version of the 3000 GT with twin turbo, 5-speed Getrag transaxle transmission (6-speed from 2nd generation) and all-wheel drive . A lighter and more powerful MR version based on the VR4 version was built especially for the Japanese market and equipped with AP brakes, among other things .

The body of the first model was redesigned for Europe and Australia: the parking lights were replaced by washer nozzles for the pop-up headlights behind them, the parking lights were moved to the front bumper together with the front indicators and arranged in a line with additional reflectors mounted on the fenders. The European models also differ technically in a few points from the American VR4 model. The European versions were tuned for operation on German motorways and received improved engine cooling, transmission cooling and brake ventilation as well as sodium-filled exhaust valves and larger water-cooled turbochargers.

The engine of the Mitsubishi 3000 GT is the Mitsubishi Motors 6G72 , which was already installed in the Mitsubishi Sigma . The engine in the 3000 GT achieves an output of 210 kW (286 hp) by means of turbocharging using two Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) TD04-9B (USA and Japan) and TD04-13G turbochargers (Europe and Australia) connected in parallel .

The Mitsubishi HSX prototype was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show in spring 1990.

Gen 1: 1990-1994

Introduction of the model with pop-up headlights. In Germany, the vehicle will not start until June 1992. In the USA, Mitsubishi 3000GT and Dodge Stealth were launched in parallel. The basic models of the first years of construction were still available with a 12V SOHC engine.

Gen2: 1994-2000

Optical revision of the model such as B. Change to conventional ellipsoid headlights, elimination of the hood humps and changes to the front and rear apron, side skirts and taillights. The transmission is replaced by a 6-speed version from Getrag.

However, the Dodge Stealth was discontinued in the spring of 1996.

Another facelift on the 3000GT took place in the summer of 1998. The differences to the EU version were:

  • other climate control unit
  • Alarm system no longer installed
  • slightly larger steering wheel
  • Brake calipers in red
  • partially reduced from two brake hoses to one brake hose per saddle on the front axle

The type or extent of the facelift varied from the summer of 1998.
