The designation was introduced in the fall of 1975 for the coupé version of the third Galant series, some of which were also referred to as Mitsubishi Galant Σ (Sigma) . The vehicle was only sold as Mitsubishi Sapporo in Europe and South America , in most other markets the car was called Mitsubishi Galant Λ (Lambda) .
The car was also marketed by the Chrysler Group, in North America as the Plymouth Sapporo and Dodge Challenger , in Australia as the Chrysler Scorpion , and later there as the Mitsubishi Scorpion . In Great Britain there was still the name Colt Sapporo , Mitsubishi's import brand there.
The Sapporo was in Europe from April 1978 in the “GL” version (A121) with a 1.6-liter engine, as the “GL / S” and “GS / R” version (A123) with a 2.0-liter engine -Motor and disc brakes available all around.
Along with the 1.6 liter engine there was a four-speed manual transmission. The "GL / S" version was equipped with a three-stage automatic. The top model "GS / R" was delivered with a five-speed manual transmission and developed 108 hp with the "4G52GS" engine. A special feature of this engine were two counter-rotating balance shafts , which improve the mass balance of the engine and thus result in low-vibration operation.
Until the model change in the summer of 1980, a rigid axle with helical springs was used at the rear .

In 1982 there was also a small series of 350 copies of the Sapporo Cabrio.
With the change to the fifth generation of Galant in the autumn of 1983, the Sapporo Coupé was discontinued, for which the Mitsubishi Starion sports car came onto the market.
