The Mitsubishi Space Star is a small car from the Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors and is described as the unofficial successor to the Mitsubishi Colt . Outside of Europe, however, the car is known as the Mitsubishi Mirage like its predecessor . The Mitsubishi Attrage notchback version is offered in Western and Central Europe in Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg, but not in Germany.

General

Mitsubishi Motors presented the concept car of the new Space Star in spring 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show . The production model was presented in 2011 at the Tokyo Motor Show under the name Mirage, the European version Space Star in autumn 2012 at the Paris Motor Show .

The Space Star / Mirage is being built at the Laem Chabang Industrial Estate in Chonburi , Thailand , and has been sold in Asia since March 28, 2012, and on the European market since February 2013. Two years after the start of production, the mark of 200,000 manufactured vehicles was exceeded in February 2014, more than 16,000 of which were sold in Europe. The Space Star received its first facelift in spring 2016, followed by another revision in November 2019.

positioning

The SpaceStar is a small car with a width of approximately 1.66 m, a wheelbase of 2.45 m and a length between 3.71 m and just under 3.85 m and is classified in this class by the Federal Motor Transport Authority and the ADAC . The Attrage notchback variant , which is offered outside of Germany, not only has a larger trunk, but also a 10 cm longer wheelbase and is still classified as a small car. However, the hatchback version of the Space Star is in the lower range of small car sizes and not too far above the small car class. This closeness to the small car class is also reflected in the rather small car typical sparse and little choice of engines and in the very cheap and simple interior.

In Germany there are the equipment versions Space Star BASIS, Space Star PLUS and Space Star TOP (as of the end of 2017). The basic version is offered in Germany in recurring promotions, since 2018 at least at some dealers also permanently, for less than 7000, - € and should be the cheapest new car in Germany. Mitsubishi Motors is promoting this pricing policy and a. with the slogan "New cars at a used car price" and in times of Corona with "immune to expensive". In test reports, it is often compared to other cheap cars. Competitors are Dacia Sandero , Fiat Panda , Citroen C1 , Hyundai i10 and Renault Twingo .

The turning circle is 9.2 m, the load approx. 400 kg and the trunk volume 235 liters, with the backrest folded down 912 liters.

safety

In Euro NCAP - Crash test he received in 2013 four out of five stars. In the assessment of the occupant safety of adults, it received 90% and in the occupant safety of children 72% of the maximum possible points. In the area of pedestrian protection he received 73% of the points.

Motorization

The Space Star is powered by three-cylinder petrol engines with a displacement of 1.0 or 1.2 liters, which produce 52 kW (71 hp) or 59 kW (80 hp). Both variants have a 5-speed manual transmission, the larger engine can also be combined with a CVT automatic transmission. The Space Star with a 1.0-liter gasoline engine has a standard consumption (combined) of a good four liters.
