Motor-Talk.de ( proper spelling : MOTOR-TALK.de ) is a website in German on the subject of mobility , operated by mobile.de GmbH based in Dreilinden. The core of the site is the forum, in which registered users have been able to exchange information about cars and motorcycles since 2001. From May 2012 to November 2018 there was a full editorial team on car-specific topics.

Motor talk consists of different areas. In addition to the forum, there are, for example, user blogs, car test reports, a private marketplace and the Motoragent purchase advice service. Motor-Talk.de is the largest online automotive community in Germany and Europe.

history

Motor-Talk.de was founded in May 2001 by Hartmut Wöhlbier and Olivier Steinhoff. Steinhoff left the project a few months later. The original idea behind Motor-Talk.de was to create an umbrella community for the existing brand-bound automotive communities. However, the cooperation did not materialize, so that Wöhlbier decided to found an independent, cross-brand community. Their concept was to allow users to comment on all content, including news, advertisements, and book and magazine presentations.

This concept made Motor-Talk.de the largest community in the automotive sector in German in just a few years. Numerous honorary moderators supported the structure in terms of content. However, the requirements that have grown as a result required further personal support and capital. Today's Motor-Talk GmbH was established in May 2007, and Tom Kedor, Bert Schulzki and Hartmut Wöhlbier worked as managing directors until January 1, 2016.

Timo Friedmann has been editor-in-chief for Motor-Talk since May 2012. He further expanded the editorial team and expanded its reach until it was closed at the end of 2018.

On September 28, 2015, mobile.de took over Motor-Talk GmbH as the sole shareholder. Malte Krüger, managing director of mobile.de, also became managing director of Motor-Talk GmbH from then on. On February 26, 2016, Motor-Talk GmbH was dissolved and Motor-Talk.de was operated by mobile.de GmbH from that point on.

In November 2018 it was announced that the entire editorial staff had been dismissed. The last editorial contribution was published on December 28, 2018.

Function and offer

The Motor Talk community is divided into several areas. No registration is required to passively use the platform. The texts and images are freely accessible and can also be found using common search engines. However, registration is required in order to be able to write your own contributions or communicate with users. As a registered user, you can access the cockpit. The cockpit is an overview of subscribed forums, topics and blogs as well as private messages (PMs) or friend requests. The users can network with each other as buddies or friends.

Forums

In the forums, users can exchange ideas and information on car-related questions. The forums are structured according to vehicle brand, model and, in some cases, series as well as topic forums (e.g. alternative fuels, vehicle maintenance, financing).

Blogs

The blog area offers creative users the opportunity to try their hand at writing their own articles as hobby authors. Registered users can subscribe to blogs and thus read regularly. They can also comment on articles. In order to highlight special blog articles, they can be marked as worth reading by the users. Every month blogs are awarded the so-called “blog recommendation”. The topics of the blogs are open, the focus for most users is on automotive content. But blogs for general communication between users are also an integral part of the community. There is also the Motor Talk blog, in which internal news is transmitted to the community.

Home / News

On the homepage, news from the automotive and engine sectors were created and published. The news area comprised driving reports, new presentations, test reports, videos, trade fair reports, etc. The editing was headed by Timo Friedmann as editor-in-chief. Nine editors worked from Berlin. The news was discontinued at the beginning of 2019. Since then Motor-Talk.de has been a community-based website again with only a few permanent employees.

Test reports

The users can write their own vehicle tests and read the tests of other community members. A maximum of five stars can be used to rate the body, drive, driving dynamics, comfort and emotion of the various vehicle models. This enables each user to receive a transparent assessment of each vehicle stored. Very detailed test reports that were also marked as helpful by other users receive the award "detailed test".

Marketplace

In the marketplace there are exclusively private offers and searches on the subject of cars and motorcycles.

MotorAgent

The MotorAgent purchase advisor has been online since January 2014 and is intended to help you find the right car. In doing so, he draws on the test reports of the community as well as real fuel consumption data from Spritmonitor  .

Carfacto

Carfacto is a vehicle database that combines technical data, images and test reports (including consumption information from fuel monitor ) for all vehicles on one platform. The models are sorted by design and year of construction.

Moderators and forum sponsors

There are currently around 50 volunteer moderators active. They monitor compliance with the Motor-Talk.de user rules as well as the legal and ethical principles. The moderators come from the ranks of the forum users and are still active as users.

Users can use a button to alert moderators if they discover a violation. All moderators can act in the whole forum, but there is a responsibility for the individual sub-forums. Generally, however, most conflicts are resolved by the members themselves.

Around 100 forum sponsors support the moderators. They ensure order in the forum by z. B. move incorrectly created threads and sort them correctly.

Community management

With the constant growth of the forum and the number of members, professional community management became necessary. The community managers take care of the users in the various forums and maintain close contact with the moderators.
