Georges Pontier

Georges Paul Pontier (born May 1, 1943 in Lavaur , Tarn department , France ) is a French Roman Catholic clergyman and retired Archbishop of Marseille . He was chairman of the French Bishops' Conference from 2013 to 2019 .

Life

First Pontier studied modern literature at the University of Toulouse and then entered the seminary in Albi , where he first studied philosophy . From 1964 to 1966 he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he obtained a licentiate in theology. On July 3, 1966, he received by the Archbishop of Albi , Claude Dupuy , the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Albi.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Digne on February 2, 1988 . The Archbishop of Marseille, Robert Coffy , donated him episcopal ordination on March 20 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Bernard Panafieu , Archbishop of Aix , and Joseph-Marie-Henri Rabine , Archbishop of Albi.

On August 5, 1996, he was named Bishop of La Rochelle . On May 12, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI called him . to the Archbishop of Marseille. On June 11 of the same year he was officially introduced to his office there. Since the Archbishopric of Marseille was a frequently associated with the cardinal dignity of the bishopric, he was considered a candidate for the cardinalate.

The French Bishops' Conference elected him President on April 17, 2013 in Lourdes . The term of office began on July 1 of the same year. In spring 2019 he did not run for re-election, his term of office expired on June 30.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on August 8, 2019.
