Albi is a French commune and the capital of the Tarn department in the Occitania region with 48,970 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). Albi is the seat of a Catholic archbishop . In 2010 the ensemble of the Bischofsviertel was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List . The inhabitants are called Albigensians (French: Albigeois ).
geography
Albi is located around 80 kilometers northeast of Toulouse in the middle of southern France. The Tarn River flows through Albi .
history
The Romans created a city called Civitas Albiensium . In 843, Charles the Bald took control of the city.
After Albi, the Cathar religious community , which was subjected to severe persecution by the church in the Middle Ages , is also called the Albigensians . In the Albigensian Wars between 1209 and 1229, Albi was almost completely destroyed.
In 1678 the city became the seat of an archbishop and since 1790 it has been the prefecture of the Tarn department. From 1943 to 1944, Albi was the seat of a Wehrmacht garrison .

Description : In red, a golden, looking, running lion on a brick, silver crenellated wall with two open round gates and drawn silver bars . The golden patriarchal cross with clover-leaf arms behind the wall is accompanied on the right by a silver, outward-facing half moon with a face and on the left by a golden sighted midday sun .

- Episcopal Quarter (Cité épiscopale d'Albi): The Episcopal Quarter is the heart of the historic old town of Albis, with the Sainte-Cécile Cathedral , the Saint-Salvi Church and the Bishop's Palace ( Palais de la Berbie ) . In 2010 this urban ensemble was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List .
- Museum Toulouse-Lautrec d'Albi: In the Bishop's Palace there is a museum dedicated to the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec , who was born in Albi . In addition to many of his works, numerous paintings by other artists, such as Edgar Degas and Auguste Rodin , can also be seen.

Agriculture
A large part of the city's food supply is grown in permaculture in the vicinity . By 2020 Albi should be completely self-sufficient with products from a radius of 60 km. The city should be a role model for other cities in Europe.
