Edouard de Perrodil

Edouard Casimir Mari Gros de Perrodil (born November 18 or 19, 1860 in Albi , † March 12, 1931 in Ambrus ) was a French cyclist, author and journalist .

Edouard de Perrodil came from an old noble family; his father was a road and railroad engineer. De Perrodil took up the profession of journalist and worked for Le Petit Journal , the Figaro and the Moniteur Universel . When he was 28 years old, his father introduced him to cycling. He also competed in bicycle races, twice in the 600-kilometer Bordeaux – Paris race : in 1892 he was 21st with a time of 56 hours and 22 minutes and was 30 hours and 45 minutes behind the winner, Auguste Stéphane . However, he is said to have had a meal of champagne in every city during the race and to have taken baskets full of groceries on his bike. The following year he finished 17th, 12 hours and 10 minutes behind Louis Cottereau . He also tried, without success, to improve the hour record of Henri Desgrange . In order to take part in a cycling race in the newly opened Vélodrome d'Hiver in Paris in 1898, he bought a chic purple jersey, but had to give up after three falls.

In September 1892 de Perrodil went on a bike tour of 2000 kilometers through France with a British embassy employee. The following year he went on a bike tour with Henri Farman from Paris to Madrid ; then he published the book Vélo! Toro! Paris-Madrid à bicyclette en 1893 with drawings by Farman. He is considered to be one of the first cycling authors. From 1897 he also wrote for the newly published magazine L'Auto-Vélo .

The author Elmar Schenkel describes de Perrodil as "one of the great cyclomans of France", who recognized early on that "cycling is a good remedy for the rampant pessimistic philosophy of Schopenhauer ".
