The world heritage in France (as of 2019) includes 45 UNESCO world heritage sites , including 39 world cultural heritage sites, 5 world natural heritage sites and a mixed cultural and natural heritage site. France acceded to the World Heritage Convention in 1975, and the first four World Heritage sites were added to the World Heritage List in 1979. The last World Heritage site to date was registered in 2019.

The following table lists the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in France in chronological order according to the year of their inclusion on the World Heritage List (K - cultural heritage, N - natural heritage, K / N - mixed, (R)  - on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger ).

1979 K 80 Mont-Saint-Michel is a former Benedictine - Abbey . It is located on the monastery island of the same name in the Normandy region in the Manche department in the municipality of Le Mont-Saint-Michel .

The buildings of the Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel were built around the same time as the Gothic cathedrals and were repeatedly changed. It was one of the most extensive, difficult and costly construction projects of the entire Middle Ages .

Both the Klosterberg and the surrounding bay have been part of the World Heritage since 1979.

In 876 consecrated Charles the Bald there is a church , and gave the sanctuary a holy relic known as Sancta Camisia called tunic that the Virgin Mary in the promise of the birth of Jesus by the archangel Gabriel  - (known as the Annunciation to have worn -) . The current Gothic new building began shortly after 1194 and lasted until 1260; the official consecration was on October 24, 1260. The building is over 130 meters long and 64 meters wide. In 1908 the church was elevated to a minor basilica .

It is a place of pilgrimage known far beyond France and one of the starting points of the Way of St. James, Via Lemovicensis ; the place is located on a hill in the northwestern tip of the Morvan on the river Cure at an altitude of around 180 to 250  m and is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France (Plus beaux villages de France) .

The Romanesque basilica Sainte-Marie-Madeleine has had the title of a minor basilica since 1925 . Since 1998 it has also been recognized as part of the " Paths of the Pilgrims of St. James in France " as a World Heritage Site (see below).

The famous prehistoric sites of Roque Saint-Christophe ( Abri ), Cro-Magnon , La Madeleine , Le Moustier , Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil and the Lascaux cave with its unique cave paintings are located in the approximately 40 kilometer long section of the river above the estuary .

It became the architectural model for the Cologne Cathedral , which began shortly afterwards, and many centuries later for St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City .

The theater is considered to be one of the best preserved Roman theaters in the 40 BC. Arausio , a Roman colony founded in the 4th century BC .

The Arch of Orange is a three-way arch of honor, probably from the late Augustan - early Iberian period, which was in front of the northern entrance to the ancient Arausio and was about 110 meters outside the city.

Monastery life ended with the French Revolution in 1789: in 1791 the last nine monks left Fontenay. After the sale, Élie de Montgolfier set up a paper mill in the abbey buildings , and the basilica was increasingly threatened with decay.

In 1906 the brothers Edouard and René Aynard bought the entire abbey and began the extensive restoration , which continues to this day. It is only thanks to their efforts that Fontenay, in its restored condition, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981.

Primeval beech forests and old beech forests of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe (extension) 2019 N 6393 Expansion of the World Heritage Site of Primeval Beech Forests and Old Beech Forests of the Carpathian Mountains and other regions of Europe by eight protected areas in France: two clusters on Mont Aigoual , three clusters on Chapitre- Petit Buëch , seven clusters in Fontainebleau forest , one cluster on Massane and Moixoses, one on Py -Pas de Rotja , one on the Massif de la Sainte-Baume , one near Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre and finally Sylve d'Argenson.
