The department of Manche [ mɑ̃ːʃ ] is the French department with serial number 50. It is located in the north of the Normandy region and is named after the English Channel , which is called La Manche in French .
geography
The department of Manche consists of the Avranchin in the south and the Cotentin in the north.
history
The Manche department was created in the context of the French Revolution on March 4, 1790 as part of the historical province of Normandy . Its administrative seat was originally Coutances . However, it was moved to Saint-Lô as early as 1796 . Coutances temporarily resumed the seat of the prefecture after the city of Saint-Lô was completely destroyed in the summer of 1944 during the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II . The department was liberated during the Allied invasion.
The department was 1960-2015 part of the region Lower Normandy , in the region in 2016 Normandy opened.

Buildings and monuments
prehistory
The state of the megalithic structures , which are the oldest monuments in the Manche department, varies. Numerous illegal excavations have led to an irretrievable loss of information. As for the preservation of monuments, apart from a handful of megaliths, they are in a desolate state.

middle Ages
Probably the most important Romanesque building in the Manche department is the Abbaye de Sainte-Trinité monastery church in Lessay , which was built in the 11th and 12th centuries by Eudes au Capel and is an early example of a ribbed vault . Another important Romanesque building is the church of the Cerisy-la-Forêt Abbey, also built in the 11th century .
The most important Gothic buildings in the Manche department are the Mont-Saint-Michel monastery and the Coutances cathedral .
Important examples of medieval defense architecture in the department are the Gratot Castle and the Pirou Castle .
Museums
The largest museum in the department is the Cherbourger Cité de la Mer . The exhibition includes a. the French nuclear submarine Le Redoubtable , an exhibition on the development of deep-sea submarines including the Archimède bathyscaphe , and a saltwater aquarium.
Avranches is home to the Scriptorial, which exhibits medieval manuscripts from the nearby Mont Saint Michel monastery, including some works from the Romanesque era. Most of the works are of a religious nature, but the collection also includes historical and music theory works, as well as writings by ancient authors.
Other museums in the department are the Maison Natale Jean-François Millet with an exhibition on the life and work of the painter, the Ferme-musée du Cotentin (an agricultural museum ), and the Ecomusée de la Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel with exhibitions on nature and to the landscape of the bay of the same name.
