Lessay is a French commune with 2,245 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Coutances and the canton of Créances .

It was created as Commune nouvelle with effect from January 1, 2016 through the amalgamation of the previous municipalities Lessay (same name) and Angoville-sur-Ay , which have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative seat is in Lessay.

location

The municipality is located west of the center of the Cotentin peninsula on the edge of the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Regional Nature Park . The municipality is crossed by the Ay river. The Aérodrome de Lessay regional airport is also located in the municipality.

tourism

The four-day market, which has been held annually since the 11th century, is famous. This fair, called Foire de Saint Croix de Lessay, attracts around 400,000 visitors. Household appliances, animals, food, garden and agricultural equipment and cars are on offer.

Parish partnership

Since 1987 there has been a community partnership with the German community Ennigerloh in North Rhine-Westphalia .
