history

Ennigerloh was first mentioned in a document in 860 on the occasion of the founding of the Herzebrock Monastery . Unfortunately, the document with the mention is no longer preserved; however, it is used in later sources, e. T. from people who have seen them. (see Tibus, founding history ...) Of course, the place is much older as a settlement, as archaeological finds attest. In the oldest lifting rolls of the Freckenhorst Abbey , written around 1050 , many courtyards, including the main courtyard Aningeralo, are already mentioned that were subject to tax at the monastery. This main courtyard is not, as is often wrongly assumed, the episcopal court Schulze Ennigerloh, but the court Schulze Nünning, which still exists today (it belonged to the nuns). "Loh" here does not simply mean forest, but rather "(holy) grove" (after the Latin word lucus with the same meaning). This is supported by the special location of today's church on top of a hill (as nowhere else in the area) on the site of an old pagan sanctuary. The syllable "ing" in the name Aningerlo does not mean, as is often claimed, that a thing place used to be here. There was probably a courtroom next to the cemetery around the church, but “ing” is never “thing”. “Ing” means belonging, here perhaps to a person named Anno, about whom nothing else is known, similar to how Carolingians belong to the clan of Karl, Bisping to the bishop, Pröpsting to the provost, Nünning to the nuns.

In 1240, the noble lord Bernhard zur Lippe left the Ennigerloh bailiwick belonging to Rheda to the Bishop of Münster. In the years from 1270 to 1336, a family of knights from Ennigerloh is often mentioned in the documents of the Freckenhorst monastery. It is probably the owner of the Schulze Ennigerloh farm, who also had a coat of arms. The shield is divided silver-blue and was officially printed for the last time on the emergency money notes of the municipality of Ennigerloh from the year 1921. (See Schwake, An old coat of arms rediscovered in the yearbook Münsterland 2010) The place of a vein court and a free chair owned by the sovereign, of the Bishop of Münster, was released for building in 1690. This resulted in the still existing dense development in the town center, called Drubbel . The Low German word drubbel is related to the High German grape: the houses are as close together as the berries of a grape.

Monument of St. James near the parish

The parish of St. Jakobus was a so-called mother parish , from which there is evidence that the parishes in Enniger, Hoetmar and Neubeckum were branched off. The older part of the church is a late Romanesque Westphalian hall from the middle of the 13th century. (See, among others, Henze, Westfälische Kunstgeschichte) The room has an almost square floor plan with originally two entrances in the north and south. As a result of the renovation in 1886, the church has lost much of its original style. At that time, the transept and choir were added in the neo-Gothic style to make room for the population, which was growing rapidly as a result of industrialization. The interior of the church was partially restored to its old state in the 1970s. The church stands on a high elevation and, together with the old mill, has shaped the city skyline for a long time. The old village was between the church and the main courtyard Schulze Ennigerloh, which was dissolved around 1860 (Haverknapp). The cemetery was around the church for around 1000 years, after 1700 the edge of the cemetery could be built on; this is how the ring of houses around the church was created. The cemetery was moved "outside the village" in 1877, where the small park on Bahnhofstrasse with the memorial is located today. Within a few decades it was so occupied that a new cemetery had to be set up at the current location.

The main element of the population has been the farmers since ancient times. Important landlords were the bishop of Münster, the cathedral winery, the imperial free world monastery Essen, the monastery Freckenhorst, the counts of Ravensberg, the monasteries Marienfeld , Herzebrock and Clarholz, Haus Geist and various other nobles. Throughout the Middle Ages, the peasants were dependent on their landlords (serfs), that is, their freedoms, which we take for granted today (free choice of place of residence, free disposal of property, free choice of spouse and much more), were severely restricted. It was therefore a great upheaval when, after the French Revolution and Napoleon and under the new sovereigns, the Prussians, the so-called peasant liberation was carried out in the 19th century.

On April 1, 1899, the community of Neubeckum was newly formed by hiving off 13.07 km 2 from Ennigerloh. Both Ennigerloh and Neubeckum were raised to their own offices in 1910 . In 1930, both offices were combined to form the office of Ennigerloh-Neubeckum . The Ennigerloh-Neubeckum office was dissolved in 1952. Ennigerloh has been vacant since then.

After the First World War, the population suffered from severe unemployment as a result of the global economic crisis. After the Second World War, the population almost doubled, not least due to the influx of refugees from the formerly German areas in the east. With the growth of the population, not only apartments but also public buildings - schools, churches, town hall, etc. - had to be built, as well as an extensive infrastructure with roads, supply lines and a large center for the processing and storage of waste in an exploited quarry . Modern play and sports facilities in the midst of green areas are available to young people and serve as a recreational area for the entire population. The outdoor pool was built in 1938, the indoor pool with sports hall in 1973. During the Cold War, US nuclear weapons were stored in the Westkirchen district (from 1975) as part of the "nuclear participation" that could have been used by the Bundeswehr.

On January 1, 1975, the Ennigerloh community was enlarged. The formerly independent communities Enniger, Ostenfelde and Westkirchen were added as new districts. On November 9, 1976, the municipality was named city.

City council

Five parliamentary groups are represented in the Ennigerloh city council. The council consists of 32 members and the mayor.

mayor

On May 5, 2002, a directly elected mayor was voted out of office in Ennigerloh for the first time in the history of North Rhine-Westphalia . This was preceded by an advance fraud , in the course of which loans approved by the city administration in the amount of approx. 145,000 euros flowed to a welfare recipient. The public prosecutor's office was investigating this, as well as the then mayor Hans-Ulrich Brinkmann ( SPD ) and several city employees.

As a result of the local elections on May 25, 2014 , the previous mayor Berthold Lülf (SPD) was confirmed in office with 83.3% of the vote.
